Trump Announces Deal With Putin for Over 300,000 Tonnes of Russian Diesel; US Treasury Issues a Temporary General License

10 October 2026 | 10 days ago

US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday, 17 Mehr 1405 (October 9, 2026), after a phone call with Vladimir Putin, that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the American and global markets, another 500,000 tonnes in November and 1,000,000 tonnes straight after that. A data provider reported that the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) also issued a "temporary general license" so Russian diesel can reach global markets, putting the proposed volume at about 22.5 million barrels. The Kremlin said the call lasted about an hour and a half, that Russia is ready to supply oil and oil products to American and world markets, and that Trump welcomed Russia's involvement in efforts to settle the war with Iran.

Brent crude settled Friday up 0.42 percent at $104.72 a barrel (Reuters, via Donya-e-Eqtesad); the same provider logged $104.43 for October 9. Al Jazeera reports that, per the American Automobile Association (AAA), the US average diesel price is $6.27 a gallon, up about 70 percent since the war began. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the deal a "gift to Putin", and Al Jazeera reported that a Ukrainian drone hit a Russian fuel site hours later.
