US embassy in Amman warns its citizens in the region of flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures
1 August 2026 | 3 months ago
The US Embassy in Amman issued a fresh security alert on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), urging American citizens currently in the region to exercise heightened caution and to prepare for possible travel disruption, including flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures. The text of the alert was also posted on the embassy's official account on X, and was carried by Al Jazeera and Shafaq News.
The notice said the regional situation remains complex because of rising tensions and that an unexpected escalation remains possible. The embassy wrote that some airlines in the region have postponed the resumption of their earlier flight schedules while others have cancelled certain routes, and advised US citizens to consider leaving or to be prepared to depart immediately if the security situation deteriorates. US citizens in Jordan were also asked to avoid travelling to military bases.
For markets, the significance of the notice lies in the picture it gives of regional air transport: delayed restoration of flight schedules and cancelled routes raise the cost and duration of passenger travel and air freight, and weigh on tourism and trade across the region's economies. The alert is a statement by a US government body, and its assessment of the sources of threat represents Washington's official position.
