US Strikes IRGC Rocket Launchers on Larak Island, Iran Hits Two US Bases in Jordan

31 August 2026 | 2 months ago

A US official confirmed on Sunday, 8 Shahrivar 1405 (August 30, 2026), according to a Guardian report citing Reuters and Agence France-Presse, that US forces struck two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The official said IRGC forces had been observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the strait. US Central Command described the action as a limited, precise strike meant to protect civilian mariners and the free flow of global trade.

The IRGC said in a statement that the US strike killed and wounded several of its personnel and civilians, and vowed to punish the attacker. According to the Guardian, the IRGC responded by striking, with ballistic missiles, technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities and fighter jet positions at two US operated bases in Jordan known as King Hussein and al Azraq, describing the damage as heavy. Jordan's army confirmed, in a statement carried by Al Jazeera, that eight missiles entered its airspace. A US source told Reuters that all incoming missiles aimed at US forces in Jordan had been intercepted, with no significant damage reported so far.

Hours after the exchange, US President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Kharg Island, the hub of Iran's oil exports, had been completely destroyed, without providing further details. The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately respond, and Iran had not addressed the claim as of this report. The Guardian noted Kharg handled about 90 percent of Iran's oil exports before the war, and the Strait of Hormuz carried about a fifth of the world's oil consumption before tensions escalated. This marks the first disclosed US strike on Iran since late July.
