US widens strikes on Iran overnight; Tabriz hit for the first time as Tehran air defenses activate
22 July 2026 | 3 months ago
The United States widened the scope of its airstrikes on Iran early on Wednesday 22 July 2026, striking a military site near the north-western city of Tabriz for the first time since hostilities intensified over the past two weeks, according to Iranian media. Overnight strikes also hit areas in the west and south of the country, including Kabudarahang in Hamadan province, Chavar and Abdanan in Ilam province, the port of Mahshahr and Sirik near the Strait of Hormuz, and Bushehr on the Persian Gulf coast. Air defenses were activated over Tehran during the attacks.
President Donald Trump played down the prospect of near-term talks, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tehran is not serious about negotiations. It was the eleventh consecutive night of exchanged strikes. Strikes near energy hubs and the Strait of Hormuz have deepened market concern over disruption to oil exports.
