Yen jumps overnight from 162.8 to 157 per dollar as Japan's finance minister declines to confirm intervention

31 July 2026 | 3 months ago

The Japanese yen strengthened suddenly and significantly against the dollar on Thursday night, 30 July 2026. According to The Japan Times, at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday Tokyo time the currency moved from 162.80 to the 157 mark against the dollar in a matter of about an hour. As of noon on Friday, 31 July 2026, the yen was trading at around 160.70.

No official confirmation of a possible intervention was made, and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama declined to comment on Friday on whether the government had acted. Takahide Kiuchi, executive economist at Nomura Research Institute, wrote in a report released Friday that given such a sharp currency move over a short period without any major news drivers, it is natural to assume that financial authorities intervened in the market. U.S. authorities reportedly also conducted a rate check, which is widely seen as a precursor to an intervention.

The yen broke through 163 to the dollar last week, a four decade low, partly due to escalating tensions in West Asia that prompted safe haven dollar buying. Analysts expect the effect of any intervention to be short lived: a $73 billion intervention that began in late April briefly pushed the currency back to around 155, but those gains vanished within a month.
