Lesson 43

A Map of Global Markets

A stock exchange is a venue, an index is a measured basket, and a currency pair is a quotation between monies. They are different objects even when a dashboard places them together.

A stock exchange is a venue, an index is a measured basket, and a currency pair is a quotation between monies. They are different objects even when a dashboard places them together. Global comparisons need exchange timezone, trading date, currency and price-versus-total-return method. A closed market’s last reading is not a live response to news published later. Sahmino’s world board groups selected global instruments; its coverage is not a list of every world exchange. Read each item’s unit and timestamp before comparing movement.

Worked example (hypothetical)

An index gains 5% in its local currency while that currency falls 4% against your reporting currency. The converted return is 1.05 × 0.96 − 1 = 0.8%, before costs. Five per cent local growth is not five per cent in every currency.

Check your understanding

Which timestamp should be used for a cross-market comparison? A clearly aligned observation time, with closed and stale markets identified.
