AMIS Market Monitor: rice hits a one-year high while wheat falls 4.8 percent

In issue No. 140 of the AMIS Market Monitor, the Agricultural Market Information System hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, published in July 2026, rice export prices in June 2026 rose 5.4 percent to $485 per tonne for Thai 100%B, a one-year high. Concerns about El Nino across key growing regions were cited as the driver.
Wheat moved the other way in the same month, falling 4.8 percent under harvest-season pressure from the advancing US crop. The report also puts the soybean harvest on track for a near-record 444 million tonnes.
AMIS flags the Strait of Hormuz oil shock as the headline downside risk to the 2027 outlook. That matters directly for Iran, which relies on imports for wheat, maize, rice and edible oils, with freight and insurance costs forming part of the landed price of those staples.
