Araghchi Urges UN Chief to Demand Immediate Halt to US Economic Measures Against Iran
27 August 2026 | 2 months ago
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in a letter dated Wednesday, 4 Shahrivar 1405 (August 26, 2026) to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Security Council president and UN member states, called for condemning what he described as an illegal US economic operation against Iran. According to Donya-e-Eqtesad, the letter responds to the sanctions campaign that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched on Monday, 2 Shahrivar (August 24), calling it Iran's "economic day of reckoning."
Araghchi wrote that the measures are designed to deprive civilians of access to food, medicine, medical equipment and energy, and should be treated as collective punishment and a terrorist act. He asked the Security Council and UN member states to condemn the use of secondary sanctions to coerce third countries into altering their lawful economic relations, and asked the Secretary General to assess and document the humanitarian consequences of the measures. Iran reserved its right to pursue compensation for the damage.
