Fleet Renewal Office: 28,000 Vehicles Scrapped in Shahrivar, the Highest Monthly Tally in 20 Months

Mohammad Sadeq Hatami, head of Iran's fleet renewal and vehicle scrappage office, said on Wednesday 14 October 2026 (22 Mehr 1405) that about 28,000 vehicles were scrapped in Shahrivar 1405, the highest monthly tally in the past 20 months. He attributed the acceleration to an amendment to Article 10 of the auto industry regulation made in Mordad and implemented in early Shahrivar.
Under the revision, one old vehicle must be scrapped for every 4 newly registered domestically made vehicles; the previous ratio was one in 12. Hatami said the change occurred despite a more than 36 percent drop in vehicle production. He made the possibility of scrapping more than 250,000 vehicles by year-end conditional on annual production of 1.7 million cars and motorcycles, and the 1406 annual goal of 500,000 conditional on the pace continuing. The last two figures are projections, not completed scrappage.
