According to Arzdigital, a malicious app called Fomopeek, published on Apple's App Store, bypassed iOS security layers and targeted the crypto wallet security of iPhone users. The app was marketed as a tool for monitoring large blockchain transactions, but according to research by blockchain security firm SlowMist and crypto exchange OKX, versions 1.1 and 1.2 broke out of Apple's sandbox isolation and, by accessing the Keychain and other apps' stored data, extracted private keys and wallet recovery phrases without requiring users to enter them directly. Per SlowMist's estimate, the malware stole nearly 580,000 dollars worth of Tether from iPhone users. Binance's security team also warned on X that the malware could gain the highest level of device access. Security experts advised users who installed the app to remove it immediately, update iOS, and transfer any remaining assets to new wallets on a separate, secure device.
