The Ethereum Foundation officially set December 2029 as the deadline to upgrade the Ethereum network's Layer 1 to quantum resistant systems, it announced on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The decision is part of the roadmap for the network's next major upgrade, known as "Hegota," and covers security changes across the execution, consensus and data availability layers. The foundation's protocol team said the 2029 target is "non negotiable" until January 2027, when external experts will reassess the pace of quantum computing progress. One key component planned for the second quarter of 2027 is a proposal called "Frame Transactions," which separates a transaction's validation, execution and fee payment steps.

Layer 2 and DeFi tokens led the move: starknet gained 18 percent, arbitrum 17 percent and uniswap 13 percent over 24 hours, while CoinDesk's DeFi Select Index rose 8.3 percent. CoinDesk attributed the rally to the 10 year US Treasury yield slipping back below 5 percent and Brent crude easing below 103 dollars, which eased the inflation scare that followed the rate increase. Bitcoin, which had risen above 78,000 dollars during Friday's European morning, reached about 80,700 dollars by Friday evening Tehran time. Under current rules, Russian retail investors face an annual trading cap of about 3,700 dollars through licensed brokers. The policy document reflects a dual approach: using crypto assets to settle international trade and bypass sanctions is permitted, but domestic use remains tightly restricted, since the bank says wider adoption would disrupt monetary tools and complicate inflation and interest rate management.

The Ethereum Foundation said on its official blog that it has set December 2029 as a binding deadline for hardening the Ethereum blockchain against threats from quantum computers, ArzDigital reported. According to the report, the date is being treated not as a flexible research goal but as a binding program tracked across the execution, consensus and data layers, so the network is ready before the arrival of advanced quantum computing. The timeline is based on estimates that so called Q day could arrive around 2030, which the foundation said aligns with assessments from companies such as Google and Microsoft. Data cited in the report shows about 65 percent of Ethereum's supply currently sits in addresses vulnerable to quantum attacks. The upcoming Hegota hard fork will serve as the first benchmark for the roadmap's progress, and the foundation said achieving full quantum resistance will require five consecutive hard forks spaced an average of 7.2 months apart, including phasing out the current cryptographic signature scheme and securing validators' withdrawal credentials.

The regulator has also referred individuals linked to the management of some of these businesses to law enforcement agencies. AUSTRAC said some of the firms were inactive or insolvent, some lacked sufficient operational capacity to provide digital asset services, and others failed to report fundamental changes to their business structure or violated registration rules; however, the agency said the primary reason for the cancellations was the high risk of money laundering and terrorism financing. AUSTRAC chief executive Brendan Thomas said in a statement that rapid cross border money transfers can create the highest level of money laundering and terrorism financing risk, and that the action came alongside the earlier shutdown of the Cryptolink platform and the deactivation of 96 crypto ATMs.
