Gharibabadi: Implementation of Iran-Oman Hormuz Understanding Hinges on US Fulfilling Obligations
29 August 2026 · last month
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, said, according to Entekhab News carried by Ecoiran on Saturday, 7 Shahrivar 1405 (August 29, 2026), that implementation of the Iran-Oman understanding on transit arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz does not proceed automatically and depends on the other side, particularly the United States, fulfilling its obligations. He said Iran is in no hurry to reopen the strait and will take its own steps whenever US obligations are met.
Gharibabadi added that Iran will continue its defensive measures and response to threats in the Strait of Hormuz. The remarks came a day after President Masoud Pezeshkian said, on the evening of Friday, 6 Shahrivar (August 28), during state broadcaster IRIB's live interview program, that Oman has accepted a roadmap for reopening the strait under the Islamabad memorandum, with Iran in return seeking an end to the blockade and sanctions and the release of its frozen resources.
