Government spokesman says the second petrol quota has been cut from 70 to 50 litres

Government spokesman Mohajerani said on Tuesday 28 July 2026 that the second petrol quota, priced at 3,000 tomans a litre, has been reduced from 70 litres to 50 litres. He stressed that there would be no price change on quota petrol and that what has been done is a change to the volume of the allowance, not its rate.
These are the first concrete details of the package the government has been describing as a rebalancing of the petrol situation. Earlier the same day the spokesman had said the decision in principle was settled but that it was not yet clear whether it would come through a price increase, a quota change, or a combination of both. The cut to the second quota indicates the quota element of the package has now taken effect.
On the same day, the deputy speaker of parliament said parliament would not grant the government permission for a petrol price increase at this juncture. Petrol consumption and the supply gap are among the central economic issues in Iran this summer, and any change to quotas or rates feeds into transport costs and inflation.
