Hemmati: No Plan for Now to Change the Bank Interest Rate; Disinflation Has Not Stopped
20 August 2026 | 2 months ago
Central Bank of Iran Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati told Donya e Eqtesad early on Thursday, 29 Mordad 1405 (August 20, 2026), that when a significant share of the country's banks are running negative capital positions, inflation cannot be controlled through the interest rate alone, and so there is currently no intention to change the bank interest rate.
In a separate remark carried the same day by Ecoiran, he noted that last month's inflation slowed somewhat, adding that the trend will not stop quickly and minor effects, such as on rents, may appear in Mordad and Shahrivar (August and September), but he does not expect this year's inflation to differ much from the prior month. He said that, contrary to some predictions of a hyperinflation episode, no such thing has happened so far.
