Iranian MP: Tehran Does Not Intend to Close Strait of Hormuz Permanently, but Transit Needs Iran's Permission
12 August 2026 | 2 months ago
Behnam Saeedi, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said in remarks carried on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 (20 Mordad 1405) that Iran does not intend to close the Strait of Hormuz and keep it closed permanently, and that Iran's position is that transit through the strait must be authorized by Iran and follow arrangements set by its armed forces.
According to Khabar Online, as reported by Ecoiran, Saeedi added that if these rules are respected and the United States does not interfere, there will be no problem with traffic through the strait. He also said talks have been held with Oman on transit routes, since Oman, as a coastal neighbor, holds part of the strait within its territorial waters, but that these talks are being pursued in a way that keeps the United States out of the matter.
