Iran's cabinet rules that blocking or suspending internet platforms requires the president's approval
28 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, that under a cabinet decision any blocking, suspension, threat or ban on the operation of digital platforms and businesses will be possible only after review by the cyberspace steering and organisation headquarters and with the president's approval.
She described the decision as a step towards protecting people's rights and creating stability for digital businesses, and, referring to recent cyberattacks on some of the country's infrastructure including the banking network, said the government is seriously pursuing stronger cybersecurity and greater resilience in communications infrastructure.
Mohajerani added that developing the national information network is on the agenda within the same framework, but that the network does not mean cutting off access to the international internet and should not be read that way. Internet restrictions have been one of the main concerns of online business operators in recent weeks.
