Iran's central bank injected 60,000 billion tomans into the interbank market in this week's open market operations

28 July 2026 | 3 months ago

Tejarat News reported on Monday, 27 July 2026 (5 Mordad 1405), that the Central Bank of Iran, based on its own forecast of liquidity conditions in the interbank market, took a repurchase agreement (repo) stance this week and conducted open market operations using two instruments: a repo worth 6,000,000 billion rials, equivalent to 60,000 billion tomans, and outright purchases of securities.

Open market operations are the tool through which the central bank manages banks' short-term liquidity and steers the interbank interest rate within its target range. A repo stance means injecting liquidity into banks against securities pledged as collateral.

The interbank rate is the main anchor for interest rates across Iran's economy and shapes the appeal of bank deposits relative to equities, gold and foreign currency. On the same day, capital market reports identified high interest rates as the principal obstacle to a rise in Tehran Stock Exchange valuations, while the central bank governor had said monthly inflation in Tir was down by close to half compared with Khordad.
