Iran's fuel distributor says more than 6 billion cubic metres of CNG delivered last year saved 6 billion litres of petrol

Saeed Rahman Salari, CNG programme manager at the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, said on Saturday 25 July 2026 (3 Mordad 1405), on the Mize Eghtesad programme of the IRINN news channel, that delivering more than 6 billion cubic metres of CNG last year saved 6 billion litres of petrol in the country.
He said there are currently about 2,370 CNG stations in Iran, of which more than 95 percent are operational. Of the country's 26 million light and semi-heavy petrol vehicles, 3.8 million, or more than 15 percent, are bi-fuel, and there is one CNG station for every 1,600 vehicles. National CNG distribution capacity exceeds 40 million cubic metres per day, of which 16 million cubic metres per day is in active use.
Salari added that about 1,000 stations are taking part in the free CNG supply campaign, with station owners covering the cost of refuelling voluntarily. He said the main reasons the CNG share has not grown in recent years are the decline in bi-fuel vehicle production after its peak in the 2000s and early 2010s, and the small price gap between petrol and alternative fuels.
