Iran's Gini Coefficient Edges Down in 1404; Tehran Still Tops Urban Inequality

Iran's household Gini coefficient fell slightly to 0.3849 in the Iranian year 1404 (ending March 2026), down 0.0021 points from the year before, according to a report carried by Mehr News Agency on Monday, October 5, 2026. The coefficient, which measures income inequality on a scale from zero (perfect equality) to one (maximum inequality), showed a mixed national picture.
Inequality rose in rural areas even as the national figure improved, and Tehran recorded the highest Gini coefficient among Iran's urban areas, remaining the country's most unequal city by income distribution.
