A report published on Monday 27 July 2026 reviews twenty years of Iranian petrol consumption alongside successive government fuel decisions. According to the report, average daily petrol consumption reached an unprecedented 135 million litres in Tir 1405 (June to July 2026), and the daily shortfall has passed 14 million litres. The report says that because of constraints arising from the war in the region, importing petrol to cover that shortfall is not possible.
On the same figures, average daily consumption went from 73.7 million litres in 1385 and 64.5 million litres in 1386, the year rationing began, to 89.1 million litres in 1397. Consumption fell to 75.5 million litres in 1399 because of the COVID pandemic, then rose to 104.8 million litres in 1401, 115.6 million in 1402 and 124.3 million in 1403.
A third petrol price tier was introduced in Azar 1404 (November to December 2025). Average daily consumption that year was 130 million litres and fell to 129 million litres in the first three months of the current year, before rising again in Tir.
