Iran's poultry union says live chicken sells at 210,000 to 220,000 tomans a kilo while farmers run losses

Habib Asadollahnejad, managing director of Iran's broiler farmers union, said on Monday, August 3, 2026, that live chicken is selling at 210,000 to 220,000 tomans a kilogram and that farmers are losing 50,000 to 60,000 tomans on every kilo they sell.
He said support purchases of chicken by the state livestock support company are continuing, but that given production volumes the surplus above domestic need has not yet been absorbed. He added that although a permit was issued to export 10,000 tonnes of chicken, no exports have taken place so far and only the guidelines have been drawn up.
Asadollahnejad said market conditions have not changed to date and that the effect of any start to exports remains to be seen. Chicken is a staple of the Iranian household basket and a meaningful component of the food price index.
