Iran's Power Generation Capacity Nears 68,000 Megawatts; Energy Ministry Pledges End to Outages Within Three to Four Weeks

Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, deputy energy minister for electricity, said in remarks carried by ISNA on Friday, August 14, 2026 (23 Mordad 1405), that Iran's power generation capacity at peak daily load has now reached close to 68,000 megawatts. He said about 2,500 megawatts have been added to the grid over the past year from new thermal plants and from lifting restrictions at existing ones, while solar capacity has grown from about 1,250 megawatts at the start of the current administration to about 5,800 megawatts.
Rajabi Mashhadi pledged that power supply restrictions, in place in parts of the country since late Tir (late July), would be lifted within three to four weeks or even sooner. He said customers who cut their electricity use by at least 10 percent from the same period a year earlier will receive a 30 percent discount on their full billing period. The generation to consumption gap, which widened to about 20,000 megawatts in the Iranian year 1403 (2024/25), has again produced planned outages in parts of the country since late July this year.
