Mohsen Tarztalab, Iran's deputy energy minister and head of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organisation (SATBA), said on Monday 27 July 2026 that the country's renewable generation capacity has risen from 1,225 MW to about 5,500 MW in under two years, and is planned to reach 12,000 MW by the end of the Iranian year.
He said more than 4,200 MW had been added to installed capacity over that period. Tarztalab put the government's longer term programme at 30,000 MW of renewable capacity, comprising 25,000 MW of solar and 5,000 MW of wind, and added that wind development has begun in the eastern regions of the country.
The remarks were made at a joint meeting with the head of the United Nations Development Programme sustainable energy hub and its representatives in Iran. They come as this summer's electricity shortfall weighs on industrial output.
