Iran's water utility says 63 percent of dam reservoirs are full but some large cities still face shortages

The spokesman for Iran's National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company said on Sunday, 26 July 2026, that 63 percent of the country's dam reservoirs are full, but that some large cities still face water shortages and that conservation is necessary. The comments came in response to questions about the possibility of water rationing in Tehran and several other major cities.
The state of water resources matters to markets through several channels. Summer water restrictions usually arrive alongside electricity restrictions and weigh on energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement and petrochemicals, and in past years have cut output rates at a number of listed companies in those sectors. Agriculture, and with it food prices, is sensitive to the same variable.
Sahmino has previously reported on the current heatwave and the warm air mass expected to persist over Tehran until 27 July.
