Kremlin Says Immediate Resumption of Trilateral Ukraine Talks Is Unlikely, as US, Ukrainian and European Officials Meet in Miami

In a phone call with Donald Trump on Friday, 17 Mehr 1405 (October 9, 2026), Vladimir Putin said an immediate resumption of talks with Ukraine is unlikely. Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov explained that Moscow had been ready to resume negotiations after the parliamentary elections, but drone attacks on Moscow, other cities and polling stations on the most important day of last month's election have made an immediate restart of the trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US talks unlikely; he added that Russia is now assessing when talks can resume. The Kremlin said both leaders are interested in attending the APEC summit in China in November.
Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff said US, Ukrainian and European officials (including the E3, the European Commission and NATO) held "constructive" talks in Miami on a proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war before winter, covering energy resilience, grain exports, security guarantees and Ukraine's reconstruction. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said on Thursday that the war has reached a dangerous "stalemate". Al Jazeera reported that a Russian strike on civilian buses in eastern Ukraine killed 33 people, the deadliest attack of the year. The Ukraine war and Russian energy sanctions affect Iran-linked markets through diesel and crude prices.
