Tax Authority Sets Refund Route for Salaried Workers Who Overpaid: Written Request to the Tax Office Nearest Their Home

10 October 2026 | 10 days ago

Mehdi Movahedi, spokesman for Iran's National Tax Administration, announced that a mechanism has been issued for refunding overpaid income tax to salaried workers. He said that in past years the tax administration held an interpretation on taxing some welfare and incentive benefits that the Administrative Justice Court later overturned, so employees whose employers withheld tax on that basis may have paid more than the legal amount. Such people can submit a written request, with documents such as pay slips and details of the tax withheld, to the tax office nearest their home, and do not need to go to the office covering their employer.

Movahedi added that once an overpayment is established the refundable amount is calculated and paid, and any tax debt the person owes on other work activity is deducted from it. He stressed that not every salaried worker is covered: the monthly exemption ceiling on salary tax this year, according to the example he gave, is 40 million tomans, and those earning less generally pay no salary tax. He also said that responsibility for remitting tax withheld from pay lies with the employer, and the employee is not required to pay it again. His remarks were carried on 18 Mehr 1405 (October 10, 2026) by EcoIran, citing Hamshahri Online.
