Qatar and Egypt stress guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz at Doha talks
26 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister met his Egyptian counterpart in Doha on Saturday, 25 July 2026, and the two stressed the need for continued dialogue and joint cooperation to reduce regional tensions and to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, within the framework of the understandings already reached.
Qatar is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the Persian Gulf and its cargoes pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Egypt is tied to the region's maritime trade through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, a route that has faced disruption in recent months.
Diplomatic contacts over a transit arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz are being pursued along several tracks at once, and any sign of an opening in the waterway feeds into global energy prices and shipping costs.
