Taiwan Restricts Mobile Internet Speed During Han Kuang Military Drill
15 August 2026 | 2 months ago
According to Khabaronline, citing Zoomit and the Associated Press, Taiwan's government restricted mobile internet bandwidth in Taipei and six other cities to 256 kilobits per second for 30 minutes on Saturday, August 15, 2026 (24 Mordad 1405), during the final phase of its annual Han Kuang military exercise. The restriction effectively cut access to 5G networks and made it impossible to exchange image or video files. The move was intended to simulate crisis conditions and preparedness for a potential Chinese attack.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching te visited medical facilities to oversee a trial relocation of critical hospital departments to underground shelters and apologized to citizens for the disruption, calling the exercise necessary for national security. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said 18 Chinese fighter jets and 11 warships were detected around the island's air and maritime boundaries during the drill.
