The US Senate advances a bill to avert a government shutdown with 89 votes in favour
4 August 2026 | 3 months ago
The United States Senate voted 89 to 4 early on Tuesday, 4 August 2026 (13 Mordad 1405), to advance a bill funding federal agencies, a measure that averts a shutdown of the federal government.
Under the measure, federal agencies would be funded through 11 December 2026. The vote was held as Congress approaches its August recess.
Past federal government shutdowns in the United States have disrupted the publication of official economic data and increased volatility in financial markets. The US budget path feeds through the dollar index and interest rate expectations into the global gold market, and from there into Iran's gold and currency markets.
