Trump Announces an "Energy Ceasefire" Between Russia and Ukraine, While Zelenskyy Still Presses for a Full 60-Day Truce

US President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform on Sunday, 19 Mehr 1405 (October 11, 2026): "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed." According to Al Jazeera, the announcement followed mutual attacks on energy infrastructure that had piled pressure on global energy prices. Al Jazeera's report did not carry a separate statement from Moscow on the ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told ABC the same day that Kyiv would organise elections if Vladimir Putin agrees to a full 60-day ceasefire. Earlier on Sunday he had said Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Moscow stops attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
On Saturday, 18 Mehr, a day after the United States temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian fuel, Trump had criticised Kyiv's strikes on Russian refineries and said it was time for Ukraine to get a new president. Zelenskyy replied that choosing the country's leader is up to Ukrainians. The story matters for Iran's markets through the price of oil and energy products.
