Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Agreed an Energy Ceasefire; Zelenskyy Reports Russian Strikes on Six Energy Sites in One Day

13 October 2026 | 8 days ago

Donald Trump told reporters on Monday 20 Mehr 1405 (12 October 2026) that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have agreed to stop striking each other's energy infrastructure: "Because I said, 'You agree', that's why they agreed." Asked about Russian attacks, he said he would have to look, as "there's been violations on both sides". Al Jazeera reported the remarks, and Donya-e-Eqtesad also quoted Trump saying Putin and Zelenskyy will agree.

Zelenskyy said the same day that Russia had struck at least six Ukrainian energy facilities and that 33 people were wounded across the country. He said Ukraine backs an energy ceasefire and carried out no attacks on Russian refineries overnight. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected any pause, saying Russia should not buy into "assurances and promises" again.

Trump made the announcement on Sunday 19 Mehr, two days after temporarily easing sanctions on Russian diesel; Al Jazeera's analyst links it to his effort to bring fuel prices down before the 12 Aban (3 November) midterm elections. The EU also added about 1,569 individuals and businesses to its sanctions list. Brent traded near $105 on Tuesday morning.
