Kremlin Rejects Zelenskyy's 60-Day Truce as Kyiv Reports Violations of the "Energy Ceasefire" and the EU Adds 1,600 Sanctions

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday, 12 October 2026 (20 Mehr 1405), rejected Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal for a full 60-day ceasefire, saying Moscow wants a lasting peace deal rather than a temporary truce, Reuters reported. Zelenskyy had asked for such a truce on Sunday, in an interview with ABC, so Ukraine could hold a presidential election.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelenskyy said Russia has violated the "energy ceasefire" Donald Trump announced and urged Washington to make sure Moscow abides by it. Ukraine's Naftogaz said a Russian overnight attack on its gas production facilities in the Kharkiv region caused a fire and damaged critical equipment. Emmanuel Macron said he had noted no energy ceasefire from the Russian side over the past 48 hours, and Donald Tusk said Russia is not interested in a ceasefire.
In Brussels, the European Union said it has formally added almost 1,600 new sanctions on Russia's military-industrial complex, covering individuals and entities; EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called it the largest expansion of the sanctions list since the war began. Continued attacks on each side's energy infrastructure matter for the global energy market, which is already under price pressure from the war on Iran.
