Typhoon Dolphin Forces Mass Evacuations in Shanghai, Cancels Over 1,300 Flights

10 August 2026 | 2 months ago

According to Iran's IRNA news agency, citing Japan's Kyodo News, Typhoon Dolphin reached the megacity of Shanghai in eastern China, home to more than 30 million people, late on Sunday, August 9, 2026, bringing winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. The storm, which had earlier passed over Taiwan and the Philippines, prompted more than 300,000 Shanghai residents to preemptively leave their homes and forced the cancellation of over 60 percent of flights at the city's Hongqiao and Pudong airports, roughly 1,300 flights in total, by Sunday. Local authorities in Taizhou, in Zhejiang province, evacuated about 390,000 people, while more than 30,000 residents were moved from higher risk areas of Shanghai. The typhoon also brought heavy rain to northern Taiwan and caused flooding in Manila, the Philippines, displacing more than 12,000 people and closing schools in several northern cities and provinces.
