UAE: Iran Targeted ADNOC Tanker With Missile in Strait of Hormuz, Gulf States Condemn
9 August 2026 | 2 months ago
The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday, August 8, 2026 (17 Mordad 1405), that a tanker owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) was hit by a missile early that morning while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to Al Jazeera, the UAE described the strike as an act of piracy by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy and called on Tehran to halt the attacks and reopen the strait fully and unconditionally.
ADNOC, cited by the UAE's state news agency WAM, confirmed one of its vessels was targeted by a missile, without giving details on damage or the ship's exact location. The company had said on Friday that 15 of its vessels have been hit by missiles or drones since the war began, including three in the same week, with the attacks killing one crew member and injuring 20 others.
Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jassim Mohammed al Budaiwi called the attack a "dangerous and unacceptable escalation," and Saudi Arabia described it as a grave breach of international law and Resolution 2817; Qatar and Jordan also condemned the attack.
