Alphabet shares fall 4.4% on a report of delay to the Gemini 3.5 Pro AI model
Shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, fell about 4.4% on Thursday, July 16, 2026, wiping an estimated $200 billion off the company's market value. The drop followed a Bloomberg report that the launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro, Google's most powerful AI model, has been delayed by months. According to the report, the model had been due for release in June, when Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled it at the Google I/O developer conference in May. The delay has been attributed to Google's efforts to improve the model's capabilities, particularly in coding, and has raised concerns that Google is falling behind rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Wall Street closes lower Thursday as a chip selloff drags the Nasdaq down 1.5%
The main U.S. stock indices closed lower on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as a selloff in semiconductor shares outweighed a run of strong quarterly earnings. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.47% to 25,881.95, the S&P 500 slipped 0.51% to 7,533.77, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.20% (105.67 points) to close at 52,552.97. The pressure came mainly from technology stocks: a roughly 4.4% drop in Alphabet shares after a report that its Gemini AI model launch had been delayed, together with broader weakness in chipmakers, turned the market red. The decline came even as U.S. banks and healthcare companies reported better-than-expected quarterly profits.

Netflix reports $12.6 billion revenue and $0.80 EPS for Q2 2026
Netflix released its second-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, 16 July 2026, after the US market close. Revenue reached $12.6 billion, up 13% year over year and roughly in line with analyst expectations. Diluted earnings per share came in at $0.80, up from $0.72 in the second quarter of 2025 and slightly above market estimates. Operating income was $4.2 billion (up 11% year over year) and the operating margin was 33.4%, versus 34.1% in the second quarter of 2025. The company said revenue grew at double-digit rates across all geographic regions. For the third quarter of 2026, Netflix guided to 12% revenue growth (11% on a currency-neutral basis) and a 33.2% operating margin, compared with 28.2% a year earlier. The stock had fallen about 21% since the start of 2026 heading into the report.

Bitcoin near $64,000 Thursday as crypto holds up against falling gold
The crypto market held up on Thursday, 16 July 2026, even as global gold slid. Per Yahoo Finance, bitcoin opened the day near $64,720 (about 0.4% below Wednesday) and eased to around $64,066 by morning US trading. By Thursday evening Tehran time it was trading near $64,085, roughly 1.4% below the prior day. Ethereum outperformed, opening near $1,917, about 1.5% higher. That resilience came as spot gold fell nearly 2% the same day to below $4,000 and silver stayed under $58. Crypto analysts attribute this week's steadiness to softer US inflation data, which opened more room for risk assets. For Iranian savers, Tether is the main gateway to the global crypto market, and moves in bitcoin and stablecoins track this dollar-denominated market.

Turkish Lira Hits Record Low as Dollar Nears 47 Lira
The Turkish lira fell to a record low against the US dollar on Thursday, July 16, 2026, with the exchange rate weakening to around 47 lira per dollar. The currency has extended a gradual slide since mid-May, when it passed 45.5 per dollar, and is down roughly 7 percent since the start of the year. Turkey's central bank had already warned that disinflation would be slower than expected, largely because of the surge in energy and food prices tied to the Iran-US war and the Strait of Hormuz crisis. As a major importer of oil and gas, Turkey sees higher energy costs widen its current-account deficit and lift demand for foreign currency, adding to the pressure on the lira. Sahmino's live feed also puts the dollar-to-lira rate near 47.

IEA Warns the World Has Just Weeks to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz
Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, warned on Thursday, July 16, 2026 that the global economy will face renewed difficulty unless the Strait of Hormuz crisis is resolved within the next few weeks. He stressed that "it is not months, it is weeks" and said the waterway must be reopened "fully and unconditionally." Noting that roughly 20 percent of the world's oil and gas normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz, Birol said markets are nervous and grappling with "big uncertainty." Disruption to Persian Gulf energy and petrochemical feedstock shipments has already hit economies such as South Korea and Japan, he said, while countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and India are far more vulnerable to a cutoff. The remarks came on the sixth day of the Iran-US military confrontation over control of Hormuz, as Brent crude steadied near 85 dollars after four days of gains.

Araghchi travels to Doha for late Qatari emir's mourning; a condolence visit, not US talks
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led a delegation to Doha on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to offer condolences over the death of Qatar's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, died on Sunday, July 12, at the age of 74. Before departing, Araghchi issued a message of sympathy to Qatar's current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Al Thani family, and he met senior Qatari officials in Doha. The trip came days after Qatar said it was targeted by an Iranian attack on Sunday, and amid a fresh surge in Iran-US military tensions. Although Tehran's currency market had in recent days been watching for possible "Doha talks," the visit was a ceremonial condolence call, not a sign of direct Iran-US negotiations. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman had earlier said Tehran has no plans for talks and is focused on defense.

Iran's Health Ministry: latest US strikes killed at least 35 and wounded more than 300
Iran's Health Ministry said on Thursday, July 16, 2026, that recent US strikes on the country's southern provinces had killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 300. The figure is a sharp rise from the ministry's earlier count (14 killed and 78 wounded on July 9) and points to the intensity of the new wave of attacks, which followed the reimposition of the US naval blockade and a widening of the bombing campaign. Washington has said the strikes are a response to the targeting of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and are meant to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping. The escalation has direct consequences for Iran's markets: it has kept Brent crude near 85 dollars a barrel, its highest in about a month, and adds fresh pressure on the free-market exchange rate and domestic inflation.

IRGC threatens to halt the entire region's energy exports: oil and gas 'for everyone or for no one'
On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, after the United States reimposed its naval blockade of Iran and widened its air campaign, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would halt the region's energy exports entirely. In its statement the Guard said that "the export of oil and gas from the region will be either for everyone or for no one." The threat points directly at the global oil and gas market, since a large share of the world's energy exports passes through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's own oil exports have fallen to less than a sixth of their pre-war level since the blockade began, and Tehran is now threatening to disrupt the exports of other regional producers as well. Against this backdrop, Brent crude rose for a fourth straight session to near 85 dollars a barrel, its highest in about a month. Further escalation raises the risk of an energy-price spike and renewed pressure on Iran's exchange rate and domestic inflation.

Chip Stocks Stayed Under Pressure Despite Strong TSMC Results as Wall Street Traded Mixed on Thursday
The main US stock indexes traded mixed and without a single direction on Thursday, July 16, 2026. In early trading, the Nasdaq lagged with a fall of about 0.8% and the S&P 500 with a decline of about 0.4%, while the Dow Jones was slightly higher. The main pressure was on semiconductor stocks, which fell despite strong results from TSMC as investors grew concerned about high valuations in the technology sector. A weaker-than-expected June retail sales report and the ongoing US-Iran war also weighed on market sentiment. On the other side, Abbott shares rose about 4% after it raised its earnings outlook, while United Airlines fell about 3% following its warning about rising fuel costs. The figures cited refer to early Thursday trading and may change by the close.

Spot Gold Slid Below $4,000 on Thursday as the Oil Jump Revived Inflation Concerns
The price of an ounce of spot gold fell on Thursday, July 16, 2026, dropping below the $4,000 mark. Based on Sahmino data, spot gold reached about $3,992 by Thursday evening, roughly 1.8% below the previous day and a marked decline from the mid-week $4,060 zone. Earlier the same day, gold had eased about 0.6% and traded near $4,034. The main driver was the jump in oil prices from the escalating regional conflict, which has revived concerns about a return of inflation and, with it, the chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike. Despite a softer US June producer price reading, traders are still pricing in roughly a 73% chance of a rate hike in December, an outlook that weighs on the non-yielding metal. In the domestic market, 18-karat gold also slipped about 0.6% on the day. The latest prices are available on the Sahmino prices page.

US Retail Sales Rose Just 0.2% in June, Below Market Expectations
The US Census Bureau said on Thursday, July 16, 2026 that the value of retail sales rose 0.2% in June from the prior month, below the 0.3% gain economists had expected and following a revised 1% advance in May. Excluding gasoline stations, sales climbed 0.7%. Autos and parts rose 1.9% and online sales also gained 1.9%, partly attributed to Amazon's Prime Day event (June 23 to 26). Spending at restaurants and bars was roughly flat. The data suggests US consumers turned more cautious amid economic uncertainty and the fading boost from tax refunds. Markets are reading the report alongside the Federal Reserve's rate outlook, a variable that moves the dollar and global markets and, through them, Iran's markets.

Iran Calls the Strait of Hormuz an 'Unbreakable Red Line,' Claims Retaliatory Strikes on US Bases in the Persian Gulf
Iran's military on Thursday, July 16, 2026 called the Strait of Hormuz an "unbreakable red line" and warned it would target "all infrastructure throughout the region" if the United States struck Iranian infrastructure. According to Al Jazeera, Iran said it had carried out retaliatory missile and drone attacks on facilities used by the US military in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan in response to the naval blockade; the Revolutionary Guard claimed it hit a base at Al-Azraq in Jordan. Most of the projectiles were intercepted and there was no independent confirmation of damage to any American facilities. At the same time, US Central Command continued its strikes on Iranian positions. According to Iran's Health Ministry, at least 35 people have been killed and more than 300 injured since the fighting resumed. The escalation has kept the geopolitical risk premium elevated in the oil market, holding Brent crude near $85 a barrel, a factor that bears directly on Iran's oil revenue and its currency market.

Oil steadies near one-month high on Thursday as profit-taking caps four-day rally
Oil prices eased slightly on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after four straight sessions of gains, steadying near their highest level in a month. Brent crude slipped about 0.2 percent to around $84.8 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate to about $79.5, as some traders took profits following a rally of more than 11 percent over the prior three sessions. Even so, concern over supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, after intensified US strikes on Iran and the reimposition of a naval blockade of Iranian ports, kept a floor under prices. The strait carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil, and swings there feed directly into Iran's oil revenue and the global energy market.

Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index jumps to 41.4 in July, far above expectations
The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's manufacturing activity index surged to 41.4 in July 2026, a sharp rise from 10.3 in June and far above the market forecast of around 13. Released Thursday, July 16, the reading points to the fastest expansion in the region's factory activity since November 2021. The new orders index rose 10 points to 37.0 and the shipments index jumped 19 points to 33.7, while the employment index climbed to 10.0. Both price gauges stayed elevated, however: the prices paid index held at 53.9 and the prices received index rose 7 points to 27.4, signaling persistent cost pressures. US initial jobless claims fall to 208,000, below market expectations
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell by about 10,000 to 208,000 in the week ended July 11, 2026, below analysts' forecast of around 218,000. Released Thursday, July 16 by the US Labor Department, it is the lowest reading in several weeks and another sign the US labor market remains firm. The four-week moving average eased to about 214,250. Continuing claims for the week ended July 4 fell by 16,000 to roughly 1.805 million, with the insured unemployment rate steady at 1.2 percent. A resilient labor market gives the Federal Reserve more room to keep interest rates higher for longer, a factor that reaches Iran's market through the global dollar and gold.

European Oil and Gas Shares Rise on the Oil Spike While Main Indices Waver
European equity markets were choppy and subdued on Thursday, July 16, as the US-Iran conflict and a jump in oil prices weighed on sentiment. Oil and gas shares and basic-resource stocks, by contrast, rose on the back of higher crude and outperformed the broader market. Brent crude has traded near a one-month high, around $85 a barrel, this week. Investors also weighed softer US inflation data, which has dampened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike, against the risk of a further spike in energy prices. The dollar hovered near a one-month low.

US Treasury Sanctions Global Network Procuring Weapons for the IRGC; Seven Targets Designated
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control on Wednesday, July 15, sanctioned seven individuals and entities over their alleged role in an international network procuring weapons for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Those designated include Behrouz Namazi, general director of the Tehran-based Nika Jet Company; Nigeria-based Vanguard Tactical Supply; Italy-based Dounia Ettaib; Russia-based Avratek; and two Russian nationals. The action was taken under Executive Order 13382 and builds on earlier designations of May 8 and June 10, 2026, announced as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz intensified.

India Bars Its Seafarers From Voyages Through the Strait of Hormuz
India's Directorate General of Shipping on Wednesday, July 15, ordered shipowners, ship managers and recruitment firms not to deploy any Indian seafarers on vessels whose routes pass through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. The order states: "No deployment of Indian seafarers on vessels undertaking voyages involving passage through the Strait of Hormuz until further orders." The decision followed the deaths of two Indian seafarers in separate attacks on commercial vessels near the waterway over the past three days. India is the world's third-largest supplier of seafarers, with more than 300,000 sailors working across global fleets; over 15,000 of them are currently stranded west of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20 percent of the world's oil and gas, and a shortage of crews could add further pressure on tanker traffic and energy shipping costs, including Iran's oil exports.

Global wheat climbs to highest since late May; futures near $6.50 a bushel
Wheat futures rose to around $6.50 a bushel in mid-July 2026, their highest level since about May 20, as investors weighed geopolitical risks and their potential impact on global grain flows. Renewed US-Iran tensions and concerns over higher fertilizer and fuel costs following disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, along with a drone strike on the Sea of Azov route (which handles about a quarter of Russia's grain exports), were among the drivers. The US government also cut its 2026/27 wheat production forecast to 41.8 million tonnes, the lowest since 1970. Global wheat prices matter for Iran, a major wheat importer, in terms of food security and import costs.

Global silver slips below $58; gold-to-silver ratio climbs to about 70
Spot silver fell about 1.5 percent in Wednesday, July 15, 2026 trade, sliding to near $57.68 an ounce, while gold held roughly steady near $4,060 an ounce. As silver's drop outpaced gold, the gold-to-silver ratio rose to about 70, its highest in recent weeks. The main drag on silver was persistently high oil prices amid US-Iran tensions and worries that inflation would linger, keeping the prospect of tighter Federal Reserve policy alive; higher interest rates weigh on non-yielding precious metals. Silver also matters for Iran's market: the global ounce feeds through to domestic silver and precious-metal prices, and several silver investment funds have launched on the Iran Mercantile Exchange in recent weeks.

Free-market dollar hovers near 188,000 tomans Thursday as market watches Doha talks
The free-market US dollar traded near 188,000 tomans on Thursday, 16 July 2026 (25 Tir 1405), holding around its highest level in a month. Some Iranian business outlets quoted the open-market rate as high as 188,600 tomans, while the UAE dirham rose about 30 tomans to roughly 51,100 tomans. Sahmino's own latest data likewise showed the dollar near 188,000 tomans on Thursday afternoon, little changed on the day. Traders say political and security headlines are the dominant driver of the rate for now, with the Iran US conflict and continued strikes keeping safe-haven demand elevated. The market is also watching mediation talks in Doha, whose outcome could shape the currency's near-term path. The Tehran Stock Exchange was closed for the Thursday weekend.

Hormuz Crisis Squeezes the Fertilizer and Petrochemical Chain; World Bank Warns of Urea Price Jump
The disruption at the Strait of Hormuz, which flared again this week with the escalation between the United States and Iran, is also keeping the global fertilizer market under pressure. Nitrogen fertilizers (urea), whose production depends on natural gas, have roughly doubled since the Hormuz disruption began in late February, and in April 2026 urea passed 850 dollars per tonne, the highest level since April 2022. Persian Gulf and West Asian countries supply close to one-quarter of the world's urea exports, and Hormuz is the main route for those shipments. During the war, Iran has halted its ammonia production, and Qatar has suspended production of urea, ammonia and sulfur after damage to facilities. The World Bank has warned that, if the Hormuz disruption persists, global fertilizer prices could rise by more than 30 percent in 2026. The relevance for Iran cuts both ways: Iran is a significant exporter of urea and petrochemical products, and the production halts and export disruption affect both the country's foreign-currency revenue and its listed petrochemical companies.

Global Gold Steadies on Thursday as Fed Rate-Hike Odds Fall; Near 4,060 Dollars
Global gold steadied on Thursday, 16 July 2026, after a week of sharp swings, rebounding to around 4,060 dollars an ounce after touching an intraday low near 4,017 dollars. The recovery was driven by softer US inflation data: the June Producer Price Index fell 0.3 percent, with the annual rate easing to 5.5 percent from 6 percent a month earlier. The data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold rates steady at its July meeting. According to the CME FedWatch tool, the probability of a rate increase at the coming meeting fell to about 10.2 percent, from around 16.6 percent before the release. On the other side, the jump in oil prices and the inflation risk it carries have capped gold's room to climb further. Global gold is the main pricing reference for coins and gold in Iran's domestic market.

Hormuz Crisis Reaches the Gas Market: European Gas and Asian LNG Rise as Qatar Exports Are Disrupted
The US-Iran military confrontation and the slowing of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz spread to the global gas market this week. Europe's benchmark natural gas (the front-month Dutch TTF contract) rose about 3 percent in mid-July 2026 trading to near 50 euros per megawatt-hour, while Asia's JKM LNG benchmark climbed above 18.5 dollars per million BTU. The main driver is the disruption to Qatar's LNG exports. Qatar, alongside Australia and the United States one of the world's largest LNG exporters, ships almost all of its cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz. About one-fifth of the world's LNG passes through the strait, and Europe sources roughly 12 to 14 percent of its LNG from Qatar. Qatar had already curbed part of its maritime activity after a projectile struck one of its LNG carriers, the Al Rekayat, on 7 July. The relevance for Iran lies in that same chokepoint: the Strait of Hormuz, which also carries Iran's oil exports, is now throttling Persian Gulf energy flows, and the surge in global energy prices feeds through to Iran's economy and domestic markets.

Naval blockade halts oil loadings at Kharg for the first prolonged stretch since the war began
According to Bloomberg, the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, reimposed this week, has halted crude oil loadings at the Kharg Island terminal for the first prolonged stretch since the war began. Kharg accounts for roughly 90 percent of Iran's crude exports, and the loading halt has put the terminal's storage capacity under pressure. Tanker-tracking data show Iran's oil storage levels are rising, though some energy analysts say production shut-ins are not necessarily imminent. Control of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil and gas supply passed before the war, has become the central point of contention between Iran and the United States and has weighed on global oil prices.

TSMC's second-quarter net profit jumps 77% to a record NT$706 billion
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, released its full second-quarter 2026 financial results on Thursday, 16 July 2026. Net profit jumped about 77% year-on-year to a record NT$706.6 billion (roughly $22 billion), far exceeding analysts' NT$632.6 billion estimate (based on LSEG data). It was the company's fifth consecutive record-profit quarter. Second-quarter revenue had already been reported at a record NT$1.27 trillion (about $39.6 billion), up 36% from NT$933.79 billion a year earlier. The main driver was robust global demand for the AI chips TSMC manufactures for giants such as Nvidia, Apple and Broadcom. Management had earlier raised its 2026 revenue-growth outlook to above 30% in US dollar terms and set this year's capital budget at a record $52 billion to $56 billion. As the maker of the world's most advanced chips, TSMC's performance is treated as a barometer of technology-sector demand and AI investment.

The main drivers are the resumed naval blockade of Iran's ports, continued US strikes, and the IRGC's threat to cut off the region's energy exports, which has revived fears of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz. Reports put Brent more than 15% above its level before the renewed blockade began. Higher global oil prices also feed indirectly into Iran's gold and currency markets.

Trump threatens US may seize Kharg Island, the terminal handling about 90% of Iran's oil exports
US President Donald Trump has again raised the prospect of seizing Kharg Island, Iran's main crude oil export terminal in the Persian Gulf, saying the United States may take control of it, as tensions with Tehran escalate. His remarks came alongside the reimposed naval blockade of Iran's ports and continued US strikes as of Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Kharg is the principal chokepoint for Iran's oil exports, with media reports estimating that about 90% of the country's crude is loaded there, so any threat against it bears directly on Iran's foreign-currency revenue and the oil market. No strike on Kharg's energy infrastructure has been reported so far, but US officials say the option remains on the table. Rising concern over Kharg and the Strait of Hormuz kept global oil prices near a one-month high through Thursday, July 16.

US disables first tanker under Iran port blockade; 'Belma' hit en route to Kharg Island
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 that it had disabled a Curacao-flagged commercial tanker named Belma that was transiting international waters of the Persian Gulf toward Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal. According to CENTCOM, the vessel ignored repeated warnings while attempting to violate the naval blockade; a US aircraft fired a missile into the ship's smokestack to disable it. It is the first vessel disabled since the blockade of Iran's ports was reimposed on Tuesday. CENTCOM said that in the first 24 hours of enforcement it redirected two compliant commercial vessels and disabled one non-compliant vessel. The move sharpens enforcement of a blockade aimed directly at Iran's oil export lifeline and could feed into global oil prices and the domestic currency market.

Fed Beige Book: US economic activity rose slightly, with signs inflation may be improving
According to the US Federal Reserve's Beige Book released on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, economic activity increased slightly in recent weeks, employment rose, and businesses and households indicated inflation may have improved. Ten of the twelve Fed districts reported slight to moderate growth, one reported a slight decline and one no change. Prices rose moderately overall, with some contacts tying the cost increases to the conflict in West Asia and others to tariffs. Manufacturing hiring was the strongest sector in several districts, supported by defense-related activity and data-center demand. Even so, several districts flagged elevated uncertainty over fuel costs in the outlook ahead.

India's Sensex and Nifty close marginally higher after surrendering morning gains as oil and US-Iran tensions weigh
India's BSE Sensex closed up 130.49 points, or 0.17 percent, at 77,185.43 on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, while the NSE Nifty 50 added 26.45 points, or 0.11 percent, to 24,078.50. The market, which had opened with a jump, gave back much of its morning gains. Buying in banking, financial services, capital goods and oil and gas stocks offset weakness in metals, IT and consumer shares. The continued rise in oil prices and the US-Iran conflict over the Strait of Hormuz pushed investors to book profits; higher oil, of which India imports the bulk of its needs, is a key risk to the country's inflation and to the rupee.

New York Fed manufacturing index jumps to 15.6 in July, far above expectations
The general business conditions index of the New York Fed's Empire State Manufacturing Survey rose to 15.6 in July, about 10 points higher than June's 5.7 and well above analysts' expectations of only a slight rise to around 6 points. A positive reading signals expanding factory activity in New York State. According to the report released on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, new orders and shipments increased strongly, employment rose at a solid clip, and firms stayed somewhat optimistic about improving conditions in the months ahead, though the pace of input and selling price increases remained elevated while slowing slightly. The survey is one of the first monthly gauges of US manufacturing for July.

United Airlines tops Q2 estimates but warns of nearly $6 billion fuel-cost hit from the oil surge
After the US market close on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, United Airlines reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share on revenue of $17.67 billion, both above analyst expectations of $1.88 and $17.61 billion. Aircraft fuel expense jumped 84 percent from last year to $5.11 billion in the quarter, at an average $4.19 per gallon. The airline said higher oil prices tied to the Strait of Hormuz tensions could add close to $6 billion to its full-year fuel bill. United raised its full-year adjusted profit outlook to $9 to $11 per share, but guided third-quarter earnings to $2.50 to $3.50, below the $3.60 analysts expected, sending the stock down about 4 percent after hours.

Wall Street closes higher Wednesday as Apple hits record on China AI approval
Wall Street's main indexes closed higher on Wednesday, July 15, lifted by Big Tech and a softer than expected wholesale inflation reading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 150.91 points (0.29 percent) to end at 52,659.18, the S&P 500 rose 0.38 percent to 7,572.43, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.62 percent to 26,269.23. Alphabet rose nearly 3 percent, and a bullish outlook from chip equipment maker ASML added to the strength. In contrast, memory chipmakers Micron and SK Hynix fell more than 7 percent. Earlier the same day, US producer prices for June came in softer than expected, easing expectations on the Federal Reserve's rate path, a factor Iranian traders watch closely for its bearing on gold and the dollar.

US turns back two commercial vessels in first enforcement of Iran blockade near Hormuz
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that in the first enforcement action of its reinstated naval blockade, it "redirected" two commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade of Iranian ports within roughly the first 17 hours after the measure took effect on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The renewed blockade marks the effective end of the June 17 memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington. According to tanker-tracking firm TankerTrackers, Iran used its shadow fleet to export about 50 million barrels of crude in June and around 10 million barrels in a single day last week. Washington's earlier blockade, from mid-April to mid-June, curbed much, though not all, of Iran's oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Alongside the continued strikes, the developments pushed oil higher for a third straight session, with Brent trading around 85 dollars a barrel on Wednesday, July 15.

Iran foreign ministry spokesman: no plans for talks now, focus is on defense
Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, that Tehran "has no plans for negotiations at present and is focused on defense." He added that Iran no longer considers itself bound by the June 17 memorandum of understanding with Washington, citing what he called repeated US violations of its commitments. On the same day, parliament speaker and senior negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf struck a somewhat different note, saying Iran must keep defending itself while also using "diplomacy and negotiations to advance and consolidate national interests," though he stressed Iran has no reason to stay committed to a deal from which it gains nothing. The remarks came amid a fifth day of US strikes on Iran and the reinstated naval blockade of its ports. In Tehran's open market that day, the free-market US dollar jumped about 2.2 percent to around 188,000 tomans.

India summons Iran's envoy after an Indian sailor is killed in the Strait of Hormuz tanker attack
India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned Iranian diplomats, including Mohammad Javad Hosseini, the deputy head of Iran's mission in New Delhi, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 (23 Tir 1405). The move followed this week's missile strike on two UAE tankers, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, in Omani waters of the Strait of Hormuz, an attack that killed one Indian sailor and wounded several others, including six Indian nationals. According to reports, the two ships had a combined crew of 46, of whom 30 were Indian seafarers. The ministry conveyed India's concerns, sought an explanation from Tehran and stressed the need to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and commercial shipping in the strategically vital waterway. The development matters for markets because India is one of Iran's important partners, including at the port of Chabahar, and one of the world's largest oil importers. Fresh friction between New Delhi and Tehran over shipping safety adds another dimension to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, which has already lifted global oil prices and the region's risk premium.

War-risk insurance for Hormuz tankers climbs to about 5% of vessel value, the new market norm after this week's attacks
According to marine-insurance market reports, hull war-risk premiums for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have risen in recent days to about 5% of a ship's value, becoming the new market norm. The rate climbed after attacks on three commercial vessels this week, reversing expectations of improving conditions. War-risk premiums had eased to around 2% following the US-Iran memorandum signed in June, but had earlier spiked as high as about 10% at the peak of the conflict. The reports say premiums for ships operating around the Persian Gulf have surged by as much as 1,000% over the past three months, turning insurance from a routine operating cost into one of the heaviest expenses in global trade. These costs bear directly on the region's oil-export economy, including Iran's.

The level was slightly below Tuesday's price of about $4,070. Soft US producer and consumer inflation data for June, which has trimmed the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at its upcoming meeting, has supported bullion, but a relatively steady dollar has capped further gains. Oman proposes managing Strait of Hormuz traffic through two separate corridors; Washington warns of sanctioning Muscat
According to CNN, citing a source familiar with the matter, Oman has proposed a plan to manage shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz via two separately controlled corridors: a southern corridor in Omani waters where vessels would sail freely under pre-war conditions, and a northern corridor in Iranian waters where ships would need Tehran's permission to pass. At the same time, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington would aggressively sanction Oman if Muscat facilitated any Iranian transit-fee mechanism. The diplomacy is unfolding amid continuing US strikes on Iran and a naval blockade of Iranian ports, along a waterway through which about one fifth of the world's energy supply passes.

Iran parliament research center: summer 2026 power deficit to reach 13,640 megawatts in realistic scenario
In a report on summer electricity supply, the research arm of Iran's parliament said the gap between supply and demand at peak consumption will reach about 13,640 megawatts under a realistic scenario, close to one fifth of available supply at the moment of greatest load. The report put maximum simultaneous supply at about 68,420 megawatts and peak network demand above 81,000 megawatts. The center added that the shortfall would be around 10,000 megawatts in the most optimistic case and nearly 18,000 megawatts in the worst. Damage to self-supplied power plants during the recent conflict has taken part of the capacity offline, deepening chronic power shortages. The report was published as rolling blackouts began in Tehran.

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the US Treasury imposed fresh sanctions on a network tied to Iranian oil trader Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, adding more than 50 individuals, companies and vessels to its blacklist. Treasury said the number of designated people and entities in the network has now passed 200, calling it one of its largest sanctions packages targeting Iran's oil-shipping sector in recent years. According to Treasury, the network used shell companies and foreign passports to conceal sales of sanctioned Iranian oil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said the department froze $130 million held in digital wallets linked to Iran's central bank. The move followed the collapse of an interim truce between Tehran and Washington and the resumption of the naval blockade of Iranian ports.

US producer prices fell 0.3% in June; annual producer inflation eased to 5.5%
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, that the Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand fell 0.3 percent in June from the prior month on a seasonally adjusted basis, the first monthly decline in about a year and against market expectations for an unchanged reading. On a 12-month basis, producer inflation eased to 5.5 percent, down from 6.5 percent in May. The monthly drop was driven mainly by a 1.4 percent fall in final demand goods prices; energy fell 6.4 percent and gasoline dropped 12 percent, while services prices rose 0.2 percent. The core index (excluding food and energy) rose 0.2 percent in June and 4.7 percent from a year earlier. The data came a day after June consumer inflation (CPI) printed at 3.5 percent. Following the two reports, traders abandoned bets on a Federal Reserve rate increase at the July 28 to 29 meeting and the dollar index slipped, which typically supports global gold and safe-haven assets. Analysts caution, however, that the jump in oil prices amid Strait of Hormuz tensions could add fresh inflationary pressure.

Revolutionary Guard threatens to halt the region's oil and gas exports; reports of at least 7 troops killed in Wednesday's strikes
The Associated Press reported on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened to halt energy exports from the region in response to the US naval blockade. The Guard's statement said: the export of oil and gas from the region will be either for everyone or for no one. The threat came after the US reimposed its naval blockade of Iran on Wednesday and intensified its air campaign. According to the AP, citing Iranian officials, the US strikes hit an Iranian army barracks, killing at least 7 troops and wounding more than 260 people across the country. The Strait of Hormuz and the region's waterways carry a large share of the world's oil, and such threats raise risk in global energy markets.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 that in a 90 minute wave beginning in the early morning US Eastern time it struck coastal defense systems and cruise missile storage and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island. CENTCOM said the operation marked the fifth consecutive day of US strikes against Iran and was aimed at degrading Iran's ability to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes followed Iranian operations on Tuesday against US allies and installations in the region, including in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. The Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the world's oil, so escalation there feeds global oil prices and, indirectly, Iran's currency and gold markets.

China's Q2 2026 growth slows to 4.3 percent, the weakest since late 2022 and below expectations
China's National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, that the country's gross domestic product grew 4.3 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2026, below analysts' 4.5 percent forecast and slower than the 5.0 percent expansion in the first quarter. It was the weakest growth rate since the end of 2022. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the Chinese economy expanded 0.9 percent. First-half 2026 GDP reached 69.57 trillion yuan (about 10.3 trillion dollars), with growth over the six months at 4.7 percent. According to the data, weak domestic demand and the oil-price shock from the Iran war offset stronger production and exports. A slowdown in China, the largest buyer of Iranian crude, matters for the outlook for oil exports and energy demand.

Iran's parliament tables 'Strategic Action Plan' bill to secure and control the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf

He said the bill's introduction coincided with the downing of several US drones in the region. Azizi stressed that Iran remains committed to defending its "red lines," particularly on managing the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. The legislative move comes amid the deepening Strait of Hormuz crisis and the naval blockade of Iranian ports, and could bear on the outlook for oil supply and energy markets. Trump says US strikes on Iran will continue "until I say it's enough," threatens power plants and bridges
US President Donald Trump said in a Fox News interview on Tuesday that US strikes on Iran would continue until he says "it's enough." He claimed Iran's military had been degraded "to a very low level" and added that the United States would strike hard "tonight," "tomorrow night" and "the night after." Trump also threatened that next week the United States would target "all the power plants" and "all the bridges" in Iran unless Tehran returned to the negotiating table. The remarks came as the Strait of Hormuz crisis escalated and the naval blockade of Iranian ports was reinstated, adding to market concerns over oil supply and the outlook for the rial.

18-karat gold enters the 18-million-toman range Wednesday; Emami coin near 184 million tomans
Iran's domestic gold and coin market rose on Wednesday, 15 July 2026 (24 Tir 1405). A gram of 18-karat gold opened trading near 17.9 million tomans and climbed to about 18.2 million tomans by midday, up roughly 1.8 percent from the previous day. The full Emami coin gained about 1.7 percent to around 184 million tomans, and its premium (bubble) widened to nearly 7 million tomans. The main driver was the weakening rial and the free-market dollar's rise to a one-month high, while the global gold ounce hovered around 4,050 dollars.

Free-market dollar climbs toward 186,700 tomans Wednesday, a fresh one-month high
The free-market US dollar extended its rise on Wednesday, 15 July 2026 (24 Tir 1405), reaching its highest level in a month. Trading opened around 184,100 tomans and the rate climbed to roughly 186,700 tomans by midday, up about 1.4 percent (around 2,600 tomans) from the previous day. The agreed-rate (tavafoqi) dollar traded in the same range, near 186,700 tomans. The intensifying military standoff between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, together with the continued naval blockade of Iranian ports, has added to pressure on the rial in recent days. The free-market dollar has roughly doubled compared with the same date a year earlier.

South Korea's Kospi surges more than 7% in a powerful rebound two days after 'Black Monday'
South Korea's Kospi surged more than 7% on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, with intraday gains reaching about 8% and pushing past the 7,400 level. This time, as buying accelerated, a buy-side trading curb (sidecar) was triggered, just two days after the July 13 "Black Monday," when the index closed down 8.95% and a sell-side circuit breaker was set off. Chipmakers led the rebound. SK Hynix rose about 11% (up to nearly 13% at one point) after its US-listed ADR jumped roughly 27% overnight on Wall Street, while Samsung Electronics also gained. The move was driven by softer-than-expected US June inflation data (an annual rate of 3.5% versus a 3.8% forecast), which trimmed bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike, along with heavy foreign buying and signs of strong AI-chip demand. The Kospi's jump was part of a broader Asian rally: Japan's Nikkei 225 rose about 1.4% and the MSCI Asia Pacific equity gauge climbed around 1.6%. For Iranian traders, a return of risk appetite in global markets serves as a gauge of the overall risk mood and of behaviour in the crypto and tether market.

Tanker Freight Rates Jump as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate; Giant Crude Carrier Rates Spike Again
Tanker freight rates climbed again as military tensions between the US and Iran resumed and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz thinned. According to a weekly tanker-market report (through about July 13), daily rates for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) rose about 11.7% from the prior week to around $137,000 a day, while mid-sized Aframax tankers surged about 44.7% to roughly $60,000 a day. It is the second major spike in VLCC rates since the crisis began; oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain far below pre-crisis levels.

Oil Rises for a Third Day; Brent Nears $86 on Wednesday
Oil prices rose for a third straight day on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as the US reinstatement of the naval blockade of Iran's ports and continued strikes by both sides around the Strait of Hormuz kept concern over global energy supply disruption alive. In Asian trading, September Brent gained about 1.2% to near $85.77 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate for August rose about 1% to around $80. Brent, which had surged roughly 11% over the previous two sessions, is now trading at its highest level in a month.

Iranian Oil Piles Up in Floating Storage off Asia; China's Crude Imports From Iran More Than Halved in June
With the US naval blockade back in force, Iran is finding it harder to sell its crude to its main customer, China. According to ship-tracking data, China's imports of Iranian crude more than halved in June from the prior month to about 654,000 barrels a day; independent Chinese refiners, Iran's main buyers, have cut purchases, while state-owned refiners have stayed on the sidelines amid banks' concerns over secondary US sanctions. As a result, a large volume of unsold Iranian oil has accumulated on tankers in Asian waters, with more than 20 million barrels idling for seven days or longer. The delay in selling this crude reduces Tehran's hard-currency revenue and weakens its hand in negotiations with Washington.

Persian Gulf Bourses Fall on Tuesday as US-Iran Tensions Escalate; Saudi Tadawul Down 0.8%
Most Persian Gulf stock markets closed lower on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, as investors turned cautious after the United States resumed its naval blockade of Iran and both sides intensified strikes around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia's benchmark Tadawul index fell 0.8%, with Al Rajhi Bank down 1.7%, though oil major Aramco rose 1.4% as crude prices climbed. Dubai's main index dropped 1.3%, even as the emirate's largest lender, Emirates NBD, gained 2.7%. Concern over disruption to global energy supply through the Strait of Hormuz was the main pressure on these markets.

US Strikes Iran for a Fourth Day; IRGC Retaliates Against American Bases in Bahrain and Kuwait
US forces struck targets inside Iran for a fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, hitting coastal areas including Bushehr and Bandar Abbas; Washington said the operation aimed to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping. US Central Command said the naval blockade of Iran's ports was reinstated at 4 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, with more than 20 warships and hundreds of military aircraft operating in the region. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said it targeted US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait with missiles and drones. The escalation, the largest since a June ceasefire, has rattled energy markets and heightened concern over disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

Tanker traffic through Strait of Hormuz slumps; US Energy Department says 8.5 million barrels transited on Sunday
As US-Iran hostilities intensified and the naval blockade was reimposed, ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply. Ship-tracking firms say the number of crossings has dropped by more than half from the previous week. Even so, the US Energy Department told CNBC that about 8.5 million barrels of oil transited the strait on Sunday despite the hostilities, still well below the roughly 20 million barrels that pass on a normal day. The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most important oil chokepoint and the main export route for Iran and its Persian Gulf neighbours, so any disruption feeds directly into global oil prices and Iran's oil revenue.

US carries out third night of strikes on Iran as naval blockade of Iranian ports takes effect
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had concluded a third consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran, hitting targets in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa and Bandar Abbas. Iranian media reported explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas and on the islands of Kish, Qeshm and Abu Musa. CENTCOM also said its naval blockade of ships travelling to and from Iranian ports resumed at 4 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday. The move follows the collapse of last month's ceasefire and centres on control of the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes. For Iran's markets, the significance lies in the direct pressure on the country's oil exports and on global energy prices.

Asian markets surge Wednesday; South Korea's KOSPI jumps about 7% and reclaims the 7,000 mark
Asian equity indices rebounded sharply on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, recovering much of the previous week's steep losses. South Korea's KOSPI climbed about 6.98%, reclaimed the 7,000-point level, and traded near 7,335 intraday; SK Hynix jumped more than 9% and Samsung Electronics rose close to 5.9%. Japan's Nikkei 225 added about 1.4%, with semiconductor makers leading the advance. The main driver was softer-than-expected US June inflation data (an annual rate of 3.5%), which eased fears of aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes, while a rotation back into chip stocks after the sharp early-week selloff, which had driven Seoul's Monday 'Black Monday' plunge of nearly 9%, fueled the surge. The rebound reflects a partial easing of the global risk aversion that spiked last week amid heightened US-Iran tensions and Strait of Hormuz concerns.

Wall Street closes higher Tuesday as US inflation cools; Nasdaq gains 0.9% on chip rebound
US stocks closed higher on Tuesday, 14 July. The S&P 500 rose 0.38% to 7,543 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.9% to 26,107, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, up about 10 points (0.02%) at 52,508. The main driver was June US inflation data, which unexpectedly fell 0.4% from the prior month and brought the annual rate down to 3.5%. The softer reading eased expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike and lifted growth and technology shares, with semiconductor stocks rebounding after the previous session's selloff. Weighing on the Dow, IBM shares sank about 25%, the stock's worst day in decades, after the company warned that second-quarter profit would fall short on soft software demand.

IBM Shares Plunge More Than 23% in Worst Day in Decades After Q2 Revenue Miss
IBM shares plunged more than 23% in Wall Street trading on Tuesday, July 14, the technology group's steepest one-day drop in decades. The slide followed the company's disclosure that second-quarter revenue came in at about $17.2 billion, short of analyst estimates of roughly $17.9 billion, while adjusted earnings were $2.93 per share versus a forecast of $3.02. The fall erased about $65 billion of the company's market value. CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the miss to weakness in the software and infrastructure businesses, saying clients had shifted part of their spending away from software toward hardware, including AI servers and memory chips. IBM's collapse triggered a wave of selling in software peers such as Salesforce, Adobe and Intuit, and it was the single heaviest drag on the S&P 500 and the Dow, muting Wall Street's early gains after a softer-than-expected US inflation reading.

According to the report, some generators may be taken offline for repairs, which could lead to scheduled temporary blackouts; even so, the island's water and electricity supply had continued without interruption as of Tuesday evening, July 14. Several vessels in the port area were also damaged, and no casualties or damage to residential or commercial buildings were reported.

European natural gas hits three-month high near €53 as Hormuz crisis deepens
European natural gas (the Dutch TTF futures contract) rose about 3% to near €53 per megawatt-hour on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, climbing to its highest level in more than three months and extending Monday's rally. The main driver is Donald Trump's decision to resume the blockade of Iran's ports and the tension in the Strait of Hormuz. LNG exports from West Asia, which had only recently begun to recover after the interim Iran-US agreement in June, have stalled again with the renewed hostilities, heightening concerns over disruptions to Qatar's shipments. Europe is entering the season of refilling gas storage for winter and is therefore sensitive to a cut in the region's exports. For Iran, holder of one of the world's largest gas reserves, swings in global energy markets are an important gauge of the sanctions and demand backdrop.

European stocks fall on Tuesday under oil-spike pressure; London's FTSE holds gains on oil majors
European equity markets fell on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, as a jump in oil prices driven by Strait of Hormuz tensions weighed on sentiment. The STOXX 600 and STOXX 50 each declined about 0.5%, Germany's DAX lost 0.3% and France's CAC 40 fell 0.2%, while London's FTSE 100 rose about 0.2%, supported by its heavy weighting in large oil companies. Energy shares bucked the trend: Shell gained 1.6%, TotalEnergies 2% and BP 2.7%, with Italy's ENI also rising. Investors worry that costlier oil could fuel inflation and raise the odds of interest-rate hikes. For Iran's market, these moves matter through the channel of global oil prices and the broader global risk mood.

Araghchi responds to Trump's toll plan: Iran is the eternal guardian of Hormuz; 20% is too much, we will be fair
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, responding to Donald Trump's plan to charge a 20% toll on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, wrote on Monday, July 13, 2026, that Iran "has always been the guardian of the Strait and will remain so forever." In a mocking tone he added that the US president is "absolutely right" that whoever secures safe passage through the waterway should be compensated, but "20% is of course too much; we will be fair." The remarks came after Trump described the US as the "guardian of the Hormuz Strait" and announced the 20% cargo toll, a plan he backed away from a day later, on Tuesday, July 14. The ceasefire memorandum signed between Iran and the US in mid-June had prohibited any charges on commercial ships in the strait. The Strait of Hormuz carries about one fifth of the world's oil and gas, and developments there feed directly into oil prices and Iran's currency and gold markets.

Trump backs off 20% Strait of Hormuz toll, opts for Persian Gulf states' trade and investment deals
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, backed off his plan to charge a "20% fee" on the cargo of every ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a plan he had announced just one day earlier, on Monday, July 13. In a statement he said that based on "highly productive conversations" with regional and Persian Gulf leaders he had decided to replace the fee with "trade and investment deals" those states would make in the United States. Trump did not specify a dollar amount or name the countries involved. Trump nonetheless said the naval blockade of Iran's ports remains in place. The International Maritime Organization had earlier said there is "no legal basis" for mandatory tolls on natural waterways. Before the recent tensions the Strait of Hormuz carried about 20 percent of the world's oil and gas, and any development there feeds directly into oil prices and Iran's currency and gold markets.

Spot silver rose about 3 percent on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, climbing toward $59 an ounce, a rebound after the previous day's sharp fall. US Treasury yields fall after soft inflation data; dollar index drops and July rate-hike odds recede
US Treasury yields fell on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, after June inflation came in softer than expected. The 10-year yield dropped to about 4.55 percent and the policy-sensitive 2-year yield fell to roughly 4.1 percent, its biggest one-day decline since February. The dollar index slipped about 0.6 percent to around 100.7. With inflation pressure easing, market-implied odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at this month's meeting fell to about 20 percent, down from more than 40 percent a day earlier, though traders still see a roughly 63 percent chance of a hike in September. Lower yields and a weaker dollar are generally read as supportive for gold and emerging markets.
