BBC Persian Calls Tehran's Bourse Iran's Best-Performing Market; TEDPIX's 52% Gain Against 87.9% Point-to-Point Inflation (Aug 14, 2026)

A recent BBC Persian report cited roughly 52% growth in Tehran's TEDPIX index since the war began and called the bourse Iran's "best-performing market" against inflation, the dollar and gold. But TEDPIX closed Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 5,736,485 points while Iran's Statistical Center's latest annual inflation reading (Tir 1405) is 66%, with point…

Lead

A recent BBC Persian report, citing roughly 52 percent growth in Tehran's benchmark stock index (TEDPIX) since the start of the war, called the bourse Iran's "best-performing market" over that period, ahead of inflation, the dollar and gold. TEDPIX closed its last recorded session, Tuesday, August 11, 2026 (20 Mordad 1405), up 1.46 percent at 5,736,485 points, the same figure Sahmino's own market briefing carried today, since Tehran's bourse and free-market currency desks are both closed for the Thursday-Friday weekend. Index growth is a measurable fact, but "index growth" is not the same thing as "investor return," and calling a market the "best-performing" one without specifying the exact period, the matching inflation rate and the type of comparison is methodologically shaky.

Background

TEDPIX has kept climbing in recent weeks: from 5,407,901 points at Wednesday, August 5's close (14 Mordad) to 5,736,485 points at Tuesday, August 11's close (20 Mordad), a gain of nearly 6 percent in a single trading week. The equal-weight index, in which large-cap names carry less weight than in the headline index, reached 1,604,844 points the same day. Over the same window, Iran's Statistical Center reported on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 (7 Mordad) that annual inflation for the Iranian month ending in late July (Tir 1405) hit 66 percent, with point-to-point (month-over-year) inflation at 87.9 percent. The 41 percent inflation figure the BBC report used does not match the latest official data, unless its exact definition, period and source are separately specified.

Key numbers

The table below lines up the figures this report rests on; for a daily read on the index itself, see Sahmino's TEDPIX price page.

On August 5, 2026 (14 Mordad), the same day TEDPIX set its latest record, Tehran's bourse reached a total market value of roughly 15,500 "hemat" (trillion toman) with retail turnover around 30 trillion toman that day, meaning the recent rally has been backed by real trading volume, not just a number on a board.

Drivers

Part of TEDPIX's recent climb can be entirely rational: many listed companies hold assets and revenue tied to the exchange rate and global commodity prices, and in an economy with point-to-point inflation near 88 percent, the nominal value of company sales, inventory and fixed assets naturally rises. That means part of the index's growth is nominal growth driven by the rial's falling purchasing power, not necessarily a matching rise in real wealth or profitability. At the same time, genuine cash inflows and rising trade value (near 30 trillion toman in a single day) show part of the recent move is backed by real demand too, not inflation alone. A third factor is shifting political and security expectations around regional developments (including the Strait of Hormuz), which has moved the risk premium priced into various assets. A fair comparison of stock returns against the dollar and gold also needs a "risk-matched basket," not just three price numbers: the dollar is a non-cash-flow asset, gold has its own characteristics, but equities can generate cash dividends on top of price gains. Without specifying which gold (bullion or coin, with or without the coin's premium) and which stock index (price index or total-return index) are being compared, the result reads more like a media comparison than a financial one.

Outlook

This section is analytical framing, not event reporting. If the goal is measuring "real investment return," the standard formula adjusts nominal return by the matching-period inflation rate: real return equals (1 + nominal return) divided by (1 + matching-period inflation), minus one. Applied to the BBC report's own two claimed inputs (52 percent index growth and 41 percent inflation), that formula yields a real return near 7.8 percent, far below the "12 percentage points above inflation" framing built on simple subtraction. But because the official matching-period inflation rate (Tir 1405's point-to-point figure) was reported near 88 percent, not 41 percent, any real-return calculation whose inflation input does not match the index return's own period produces an analytically invalid number. A sharper read would look at the total-return index (including cash dividends) rather than the price index, the dispersion of returns across sectors and symbols, and, above all, whether real company profitability (EPS, margins, real sales) has grown as fast as share prices.

Bottom line

The core problem with the BBC report is not that it got the index-growth figure wrong; it is that it drew a conclusion far larger than one correct data point can support. TEDPIX's roughly 52 percent gain over a given period is a measurable fact. But that fact alone cannot support calling the bourse Iran's "best-performing market," a claim that requires a precisely defined period, the equal-weight return, cash dividends, the real matching-period inflation rate (not an unrelated annual figure) and each asset's risk profile, none of which factor into the simple "12 points above inflation" framing.

What to watch

  • The gap between TEDPIX and the equal-weight index in the coming weeks, to gauge whether the rally is concentrated in a few large caps or broad-based.
  • Iran's Statistical Center's Mordad 1405 inflation report, due in the first ten days of Shahrivar (early September) by its usual schedule, which will give a fresher base for any real-return calculation.
  • Interim earnings reports and shareholder meetings at major listed companies, to check whether real profit growth (EPS) is keeping pace with share-price gains.
  • Whether any "capital inflow" figure cited in media coverage of the bourse distinguishes between mutual funds' total assets under management (AUM) and net new cash inflow, two very different concepts.
