The dollar's climb is not new, but this week's pace has been notable: the free-market rate rose from about 175,000 tomans on Sunday, July 5 (14 Tir), to 178,595 tomans on Wednesday, July 8 (17 Tir), and finally to 180,195 tomans early Thursday. The immediate trigger was US President Donald Trump's remark, on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Ankara, that the ceasefire with Iran was "over," and the US Treasury's revocation of a limited license for Iranian oil sales, hours after a tanker was attacked near Lima, Oman. The coin premium followed a similar path: from about 6,636,000 tomans the prior week to 7,091,000 tomans in the week ending July 9, more than doubling over the past month, according to TGJU data.

The collapse of the Iran-US ceasefire and rising tension in the Strait of Hormuz are the direct mechanism behind the dollar's jump: following Trump's NATO-summit remarks and the tanker attack near Lima, the revocation of the limited Iranian oil-sale license raised free-market traders' perception of the country's foreign-currency income risk, and stoked domestic safe-haven demand for dollars and gold. The coin premium, however, works through a different mechanism: the Emami coin's price has two components, the intrinsic value of the gold and dollars it contains, plus a premium that is purely a reflection of precautionary, psychological domestic demand. When global gold retreats, pressured by a stronger dollar index (101.07) and Federal Reserve rate expectations (the next FOMC meeting is August 6 to 7), while the domestic coin gets pricier, the price rise is coming mainly from the rial's depreciation and a widening premium, not from rising global gold; that is why the coin premium can be read as a gauge of domestic fear, independent of the global gold price.

A simple example shows what this inflation gap does to rial savings: a one-year, 100-million-toman deposit, at the Money and Credit Council's approved rate of about 23% a year, grows to about 123 million tomans by year end. But measured against the Central Bank's 83.1% point-to-point inflation over the same period, a basket of goods that cost 100 million tomans a year ago now costs close to 183.1 million tomans; that same deposit, despite its nominal interest, retains only about 67% of last year's purchasing power, a real loss of nearly 33%. Using the Statistical Center's 88.6% point-to-point figure, that retention falls to about 65%, a real loss of nearly 35%. This is only an arithmetic exercise based on existing official statistics, not a recommendation to withdraw a deposit or buy an alternative asset.

The gap between the Central Bank's 83.1% and the Statistical Center's 88.6% point-to-point inflation figures, both released for the same Khordad 1405 period, traces back to the two agencies' differing baskets and methodology, not necessarily an error by either one; but that several-percentage-point gap makes it harder to plan household finances around any single number.

What to Watch

Tehran Stock Exchange's reopening on Saturday, July 11 (20 Tir), and how the currency and coin markets react to any developments in the Strait of Hormuz over the two-day closure, will offer the first signs of these markets' short-term direction. Also worth watching: any Central Bank response to the dollar's move past the 180,000-toman channel, the Tir-month inflation report due with about a three-week lag in early Mordad (early August), and the coin premium's next weekly reading.
