How a Fed Decision Reaches the Toman

A Federal Reserve decision affects market expectations about future policy, rather than only the announced rate today. An expected decision can produce little price movement; a surprise in the statement or projected path can matter more.

A Federal Reserve decision affects market expectations about future policy, rather than only the announced rate today. An expected decision can produce little price movement; a surprise in the statement or projected path can matter more. Global rates, dollar quotations and commodity prices may transmit the news toward Iran, but local FX access, supply, policy and premiums modify that transmission. Distinguish announcement time from later observations and do not attribute every simultaneous move to the same event.

Worked example (hypothetical)

After a hypothetical announcement, gold falls 2% while Tehran’s dollar quote rises 3%. The local metal component changes by 0.98 × 1.03 − 1 = +0.94%, before any coin premium. The announcement alone does not prove the local FX move’s cause.

Check your understanding

What should be recorded before explaining the reaction? The prior expectation, exact announcement, observation times and relevant local conditions.
