Internet penetration in Iran reaches 89.3 percent and more than half of users say their income depends on it

The latest national survey by the Iranian Students Polling Agency (ISPA), reported by the daily Donya-e-Eqtesad on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405), puts internet penetration in Iran at 89.3 percent.
According to the same survey, more than half of users say their income depends on the online space, meaning the livelihoods of a large share of households are tied to stable internet access.
The figures come as Iranian online businesses face new restrictions. Reports this week said Google will begin mandatory Android developer verification on 30 September 2026, a step that will block Iran based developers from publishing their apps globally. The breadth of household income dependence on the internet raises the economic cost of any network disruption or restriction.
