Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek (Tuesday, September 1, 2026) that Iran would "immediately" reciprocate if the United States returns to its commitments under a June 2026 memorandum of understanding, brokered by Islamabad and Qatar, which had lapsed after weeks of violations. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson and the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Qatar also called for de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on the sidelines of the same summit. The remarks were reported by Al Jazeera, citing Iran's official news agency IRNA.
