President Masoud Pezeshkian told Al Jazeera in an interview aired on Saturday, September 26, 2026: "We have no trust in the American side and do not know on what basis an understanding can be reached with it." He said mediators Qatar and Pakistan are conveying Iran's messages to Washington, and that the talks rest on the memorandum of understanding the two sides reached in June, on which the US must clarify its position. Al Jazeera reported that as of Saturday the US government had not publicly responded to Iran's seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Pezeshkian placed responsibility for the strait's closure on the United States and said the waterway would reopen to commercial shipping if negotiations ended the war. Donya-e-Eqtesad also reported that, asked about a meeting with Trump, he said there was no reason to meet when the American side had not honoured the previous agreement.
