China Calls for Early Restoration of Free and Safe Passage Through the Strait of Hormuz
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday (13 July 2026) at a Beijing briefing that an early resumption of free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz serves the interests of all sides, and that China stands ready to keep communicating with relevant countries and the international community on the matter. The remarks followed US President Donald Trump's reinstatement of a naval blockade on Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and a 20 percent fee imposed on other cargo, as the United States and Iran exchanged strikes for a third consecutive day. China is the largest buyer of Iranian crude and a major consumer of oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that carries roughly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade. Reduced transit and higher risk in the strait bear directly on Iran's oil export flows and on global energy prices.

UN shipping agency calls Trump's 20 percent Strait of Hormuz toll plan without legal basis
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations' maritime body, rejected the US administration's plan to charge a 20 percent toll on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Its secretary-general, Arsenio Dominguez, said on Monday, July 13, 2026, that there is no legal basis to impose mandatory tolls simply to transit a strait, and that the organization's stance against charging for passage through waterways used for international navigation has not changed. The IMO's position rests on the Law of the Sea Convention, which grants a right of transit passage through international straits and bars the levying of tolls. The reaction followed US President Donald Trump's demand for payment equal to 20 percent of the value of cargo crossing the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for providing security. The Strait of Hormuz is the main route for Persian Gulf oil exports.

Wall Street opens mixed after soft US inflation data; IBM slumps about 22 percent
US stocks opened mixed on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, after softer-than-expected June inflation data. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rose at the open, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell under pressure from IBM. IBM shares dropped about 22 percent after weak preliminary quarterly results. June's Consumer Price Index fell 0.4 percent from the prior month and rose 3.5 percent from a year earlier, below the 3.8 percent forecast. After the data, traders trimmed bets on a rate increase at the Fed's upcoming meeting. Second-quarter results from major US banks, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, were also in focus.

Warsh in first Congressional testimony: vows to tame inflation but gives no rate-path signal
Kevin Warsh, the new chair of the US Federal Reserve, told Congress on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in his first testimony that if policy is set correctly the inflation surge of the past five years will be a thing of the past, and that the central bank has no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation. He stressed a commitment to restoring price stability. Continuing his new approach and unlike his predecessors, Warsh gave no clear guidance on the path of interest rates. The testimony coincided with the release of June inflation data showing the annual Consumer Price Index at 3.5 percent and the core rate (excluding food and energy) at 2.6 percent. Fed policy is a main channel affecting the global dollar and gold prices, so it matters for Iran's market.

Goldman Sachs Posts Record $20.3 Billion Revenue in Strong Second Quarter
Investment bank Goldman Sachs reported record second-quarter 2026 results on Tuesday, July 14. Net revenue for the three months ended June 30 reached $20.3 billion, up 39% from a year earlier, and diluted earnings per share came in at $20.98, well above analysts' expectations of roughly $14.5. Goldman was one of five major US banks reporting on Tuesday, the same day as the inflation data. JPMorgan had earlier also posted a record quarterly profit.

Global Gold Climbs Back Above $4,000 After Soft US Inflation Data
Spot gold climbed back above $4,000 an ounce on Tuesday, July 14, after three straight sessions of declines. The rebound followed the release of June US inflation data that came in softer than expected, easing some concern about a Federal Reserve rate hike. According to Sahmino data, gold traded near $4,076 an ounce during Tehran afternoon hours, up about 1.9% from the previous day. On Monday, gold had slipped below $4,000 to its lowest level since July 1. A softer dollar and higher oil prices also supported the metal. Swings in the global ounce, together with a weaker rial, are the main drivers of gold and coin prices in Iran's domestic market.

US Inflation Fell 0.4% in June, Beating Forecasts; Annual Rate Eases to 3.5%
US consumer prices fell a seasonally adjusted 0.4% in June from the prior month, the biggest monthly decline in more than six years, driven mainly by a sharp drop in energy and gasoline prices. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the data on Tuesday, July 14. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected a 0.2% decline. The annual inflation rate eased to 3.5% from 4.2% in May, below the market's 3.8% forecast. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) was flat in June, putting its 12-month rate at 2.6%, versus expectations of a 0.2% monthly rise and a 2.9% annual rate. After the release, markets cut the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the July meeting to about 17%, down from roughly 42% on Monday, though traders still price about a 60% chance of a hike at the September meeting. The path of US rates and the global dollar feed through to gold and dollar prices in Iran's market.

Tehran Stock Exchange falls for a fourth straight session; main index holds below 5 million on a 1.75% drop
The Tehran Stock Exchange's main index (TEDPIX) closed on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, down about 1.75 percent, shedding nearly 89,000 points to around 4,967,000 units, and held below the 5 million mark for a fourth consecutive session. The sell-off was accompanied by an outflow of roughly 4,000 billion tomans of retail (real) money from the market. Analysts cited political and regional risks, worry over tension in the Strait of Hormuz, and the prospect of higher interest rates as the main drivers of the continued decline. Even so, some groups such as pharmaceuticals showed signs of returning demand. The same day's jump in the free-market dollar above 180,000 tomans has pulled part of retail liquidity out of equities and toward the currency and gold markets.

JPMorgan, biggest US bank, posts record quarterly profit of about $21 billion; revenue up 28%
JPMorgan Chase, the largest US bank, reported second-quarter results (for the period ended June 30) on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, posting a record net income of about $21.1 billion, up nearly 41% from a year earlier and the highest quarterly profit in the bank's history. Net revenue rose 28% to $57.3 billion, beating analyst expectations. Equities trading revenue surged 86% to about $6 billion, and the sale of part of the bank's stake in Visa added roughly $4.6 billion. The CEO said performance was strong across the firm and that revenue in each line of business hit a new record. JPMorgan opens Wall Street's big-bank earnings season, with Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs also due to report on Tuesday. Coming alongside the June US inflation data, the results serve as a gauge of the health of the American economy and consumer.

Brent Crude Hits One Month High, Up Over 4 Percent After Trump's 20 Percent Strait of Hormuz Toll Plan
Brent crude oil jumped more than 4 percent on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, reaching about $86.9 a barrel, its highest level in a month. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also rose about 2.8 percent to near $80.4 a barrel. The main driver was Donald Trump's announcement of a 20 percent toll on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the reinstatement of a naval blockade of Iranian ports. Estimates put the toll at roughly $32 million for a supertanker, far above the previous charge of up to $2 million. Fears of a supply disruption intensified after Hormuz transits fell to 57 from Friday through Sunday, a drop of more than 50 percent versus the prior week. The Strait of Hormuz is the main export route for Iranian and Persian Gulf oil, and swings in global crude prices feed directly into Iran's foreign-currency earnings and domestic markets.

64 kg of gold bars sold at Tuesday's Exchange Center auction; average 9.346 billion tomans per bar
Iran's Currency and Gold Exchange Center (Markaz Mobadeleh) held its 116th gold bar auction on Tuesday, 14 July 2026 (23 Tir 1405). Of the 115 kilograms of gold bars offered, 64 kilograms were sold for more than 598 billion tomans, at an average price of 9.346 billion tomans per standard bar. According to the report, 19 gold bar auctions have been held at the Exchange Center since the start of the Iranian year 1405, selling a combined 1,506 kilograms for 13,253 billion tomans. The auctions are a government tool to meet market gold demand and calm prices, and they come on days when the free market dollar has climbed above 180,000 tomans. About 51 kilograms of the bars offered went unsold, pointing to less than full buyer appetite at these price levels.

18-carat gold and the Emami coin rise in Tuesday trading as a weaker rial outweighs a steady global ounce
Domestic gold and coin prices rose on Tuesday, 14 July 2026. Jamejam reported that each gram of 18-carat gold entered the 17.6 million toman range, while Sahmino's price service showed it near 17.8 million toman (up about 0.7 percent) by around 11:35. The Emami coin reached about 179.5 million toman, up roughly 1.4 percent per Sahmino data, and the mesghal of gold sat in the 77 million toman range. The gains came while the global gold ounce hovered near 4,000 dollars, so the main driver of the domestic rise was the weaker rial and the climbing free-market dollar rather than the world price.

Global gold holds below $4,000 for a third straight session, weakest since July 1
Spot gold held below the $4,000 mark on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, trading around $3,996 an ounce in Asian morning hours, its third consecutive session lower and the weakest level since July 1. The move followed Monday's slide of nearly 3 percent. The jump in oil prices amid renewed US and Iran tensions over the Strait of Hormuz has lifted inflation worries and reinforced market expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated, which dims the appeal of non-yielding gold. The drop in the global ounce is also weighing on domestic gold and coin prices in Iran (the latest figures are available in Sahmino's prices section).

Bloomberg: Iran exported about 57 million barrels of crude between two US blockades
Bloomberg reported on Monday, July 13, 2026 (22 Tir 1405) that Iran exported at least 57 million barrels of crude oil during the gap between two rounds of US naval blockade, about 2.2 million barrels a day, a flow that helped keep global oil prices in check for a time. The estimate landed the same day US President Donald Trump said Washington would restore its blockade of ships entering and leaving Iranian ports and impose a 20 percent charge on other cargoes passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The move came less than a month after an interim deal between the two countries to ease restrictions and lift sanctions on oil sales. Reinstating the blockade puts Iran's oil exports and foreign-currency revenue back under pressure, after earlier reports that a portion of Iran's unsold cargoes had been left idling in Asian waters.

OPEC+ crude output rose by about 3 million barrels per day in June to average 36.28 million barrels per day. India's retail inflation accelerates to 4.38 percent in June, above forecasts
India's National Statistics Office said on Monday, July 13, that retail (consumer price) inflation reached 4.38 percent in June 2026, accelerating from 3.93 percent in May and coming in above analysts' forecasts. Food inflation was reported at 5.32 percent for June. The pickup, attributed in part to higher global oil prices following the US-Iran tensions, has strengthened market expectations that the Reserve Bank of India could raise interest rates. India is one of the world's largest oil importers, and the direction of its monetary policy and energy demand carries weight for regional markets.

China's H1 2026 foreign trade tops 25 trillion yuan, up 16.9 percent
China's General Administration of Customs said on Tuesday, July 14, that the country's goods trade reached 25.47 trillion yuan (about 3.75 trillion dollars) in the first half of 2026, up 16.9 percent year on year and the first time the first-half figure has passed 25 trillion yuan. Exports rose 13.4 percent to 14.73 trillion yuan and imports climbed 22.1 percent to 10.74 trillion yuan over the January to June period. In June alone, combined exports and imports totaled 4.78 trillion yuan, a 24.2 percent increase from June a year earlier. China is Iran's largest trading partner and top oil buyer, so the trajectory of Chinese foreign trade feeds directly into demand for Iranian goods and export routes.

South Korea's KOSPI rebounds on Tuesday after 'Black Monday,' up over 2% in morning trade
South Korea's KOSPI index rebounded on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, after plunging 8.95% the previous day in a session dubbed 'Black Monday.' The index opened at 6,769 (down 0.56%) but quickly recovered, trading at 6,952 by 10:01 a.m. Seoul time, a gain of 2.14%. Buying by institutional investors, which reached about 1.62 trillion won by then, drove the advance, with the semiconductor sector leading the recovery. Samsung Electronics rose 5.89% and SK Hynix gained 4.5%. The bounce after the near 9% drop was seen largely as bargain hunting, against a backdrop of worries over an escalating US-Iran conflict and fears of a peak in memory-chip prices.

War-risk insurance for ships in the Strait of Hormuz jumps to around 5% of vessel value
War-risk insurance costs for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz have surged as the US-Iran conflict escalates. According to insurance-industry reports in the days leading up to July 14, 2026, war-risk rates for vessels operating inside the Gulf have risen to roughly 3% of a vessel's value, up from about 2% late last week, while hull war-risk premiums for a Hormuz transit have climbed to around 5% of vessel value, emerging as the market's new norm. The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) raised its advisory for transiting Hormuz to the highest 'severe' level. War-risk cover is typically sold on a seven-day basis and repriced every 24 to 48 hours, so even small shifts at these levels add hundreds of thousands of dollars in daily costs for large tankers. Some insurers have advised owners to pause voyages, and ship traffic has declined.

Brent rises 2% to $85 on Tuesday as US-Iran strikes enter a third night and Hormuz traffic falls
Crude oil rose further on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, as tensions between the United States and Iran escalated. Brent gained about 2% to $85 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 2.3% to $80, extending Monday's near 9% jump, which was Brent's biggest single-day gain since 2020. US forces struck Iranian military targets, coastal air-defense systems and missile and drone capabilities for a third consecutive night in a roughly five-hour mission. Ship-tracking data showed confirmed crossings of the Strait of Hormuz fell about 52% week on week over July 10 to 12 as vessels shifted to more defensive routing. The strait carries roughly one fifth of the world's oil and gas trade, so disruptions feed directly into global prices and inflation expectations.

US June inflation data is released today, Tuesday; forecasts point to the annual rate easing to about 3.8 percent
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the June Consumer Price Index (CPI) today, Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time (about 17:00 Tehran time). Surveys expect the headline annual inflation rate to ease from 4.2 percent in the May reading to about 3.8 percent, with monthly inflation at around minus 0.1 percent, driven mainly by a drop in gasoline prices. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) is forecast at about 2.9 percent. The recent jump in oil prices amid US-Iran tensions has raised the risk of inflation staying higher for longer. The reading is pivotal for the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path and, through the strength of the dollar and the global gold price, feeds into Iran's gold and currency markets.

The UAE condemned the attack and said it reserves its full right to respond to the escalation. Iran had not commented on the attack by the time of publication. South Korea's Kospi crashes 8.95% in a 'Black Monday'; Seoul trading halted
South Korea's Kospi closed down 8.95% at 6,806.93 on Monday, July 13, 2026, a plunge local media dubbed a "Black Monday." After the index's loss widened past 8% at 1:28 p.m. local time, the Korea Exchange triggered a circuit breaker that halted trading for 20 minutes, the seventh such halt on the Kospi this year. Chipmakers led the rout. SK Hynix tumbled 15.37% to about 1.85 million won, its biggest one-day drop on record, surpassing the 14.93% fall during the 2008 financial crisis. Samsung Electronics fell 10.70% to close at 254,500 won. Analysts cited three drivers: fears that the semiconductor upcycle has peaked, profit-taking after SK Hynix's U.S. ADR listing on July 10, and the escalating U.S. and Iran conflict in West Asia, which lifted oil and stoked global risk-off sentiment. The chip selloff spread to Wall Street, where Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron each fell roughly 3% to 4%.

All three main Wall Street indexes closed lower Monday; Nasdaq fell 1.5% under chip-stock pressure
US stocks closed lower on Monday, July 13, 2026, with all three main indexes finishing in the red. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.55% to 25,873, the S&P 500 lost 0.79% to 7,515, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 138 points (0.26%) to 52,498. The declines followed the US administration's move to reinstate a blockade on Iranian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which sent US crude prices up about 8.5% and revived fears of inflationary pressure and a delayed rate cut. The heaviest pressure fell on semiconductors: SK Hynix shares dropped about 8%, Micron about 5%, AMD about 4%, and Intel about 7%. The intensifying US-Iran military standoff and rising energy prices have sharpened risk-off sentiment across global markets, feeding through to gold and to Iran's asset markets via the oil price and interest-rate expectations.

Market participants say a slump in transactions and low household buying power have muted the effect of currency swings on car prices.

According to CME's FedWatch tool, as of Monday, 13 July 2026, the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September meeting had risen to about 62 percent. The chance of rates reaching the 3.75 to 4.0 percent range at that meeting climbed to 50.5 percent, up from 33.5 percent a month earlier, while the odds of no change fell to 37.8 percent from 61.7 percent. The jump in oil prices amid the Strait of Hormuz tensions, and the resulting inflation concerns, are cited as the main driver of the shift. A US rate hike typically strengthens the dollar and can weigh on global gold prices, two variables that matter directly for Iran's markets.

Trump reinstates naval blockade of Iranian ships in Strait of Hormuz; 20% charge on other cargoes
On Monday, 13 July 2026, Donald Trump said the United States is reinstating its naval blockade of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz, weeks after last month's ceasefire memorandum between Washington and Tehran collapsed. Trump also demanded a 20 percent reimbursement on the value of all other cargo passing through the waterway. Under the plan, Iranian ships and buyers of Iranian oil would be barred from entering or leaving, while other countries would retain free use of the strait. Lifting the blockade had been part of last month's war-ending agreement, which has now stalled largely over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Amid the tensions, Brent crude rose more than 3 percent on Monday, moving past 78 dollars a barrel.

Bitcoin ETFs snap a 10-day outflow streak with $221 million of inflows as ether and XRP fall
US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds ended a 10-day run of outflows on Friday, drawing about 221.7 million dollars in net inflows, their largest single-day haul in two months. The figure, covering the last US trading session before the weekend, is read as a partial return of institutional demand, even as the broader crypto market opened the week under the shadow of renewed US-Iran tensions. In Monday trading on 13 July 2026, ether fell about 2.9 percent over 24 hours to near 1,736 dollars and XRP dropped about 2.9 percent to near 1.09 dollars. Bitcoin proved more resilient to the selling pressure, hovering in the area near 63,000 dollars.

Wall Street splits Monday: Dow edges higher while Nasdaq falls under chip-stock pressure
US stocks split in Monday trading on 13 July 2026. The Dow Jones rose about 0.1 percent, while the S&P 500 fell close to 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq dropped roughly 0.7 percent. A jump in oil prices, driven by a fresh exchange of US and Iranian strikes over the Strait of Hormuz, lifted energy shares such as ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and Chevron by about 1 percent, while chip and memory makers including Micron, Western Digital and SanDisk fell by nearly 5 percent, weighing most heavily on the Nasdaq. In the same session, Brent crude rose about 3.4 percent to near 77.7 dollars a barrel and West Texas Intermediate gained roughly 3.5 percent to near 72.9 dollars. US investors were also awaiting June consumer inflation data and the start of the big banks' earnings season in the days ahead.

Bitcoin stays muted against the war, near $63,400 while gold and oil swing
Bitcoin traded near $63,400 on Monday, July 13, 2026, down about 1 percent, while Ethereum sat around $1,807. Unlike gold, oil, equities and bonds, which swung sharply after a fourth round of US strikes on Iran, the crypto market held in a narrow range. According to CoinDesk, Bitcoin's muted reaction to the war headlines marks a shift in the asset's behaviour; per the analysis, Bitcoin now moves more with dollar liquidity and the technology-equity cycle than with West Asia military tensions. The point matters for Iranian tether and crypto traders, as it shows the global market's swings on tense days do not necessarily follow war news.

IEA: return of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz lifted global supply by 4.1 million barrels a day in June
In its monthly Oil Market Report published this week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said global oil supply jumped by 4.1 million barrels a day in June to 98.8 million barrels a day, driven mainly by the resumption of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz after the interim US-Iran ceasefire. Even so, world output remains about 9.4 million barrels a day below pre-war levels. According to the report, total Persian Gulf oil exports rose by 6.5 million barrels a day in June to 16.1 million barrels a day, still far below the pre-war average of about 24 million barrels a day. The agency warned that the escalation in fighting on July 7 and 8 clouds the outlook and could upend its forecast of the market flipping to a surplus in 2027. Global oil demand is projected to fall by about 1 million barrels a day across 2026 and to rise by about 2 million barrels a day in 2027.

Tankers cross the Strait of Hormuz in secret; only 6 ships passed on Sunday with transponders off
According to preliminary data from ship-tracking firm Kpler, published by Bloomberg, only 6 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the lowest number in five weeks and far below the normal daily average of 18 to 22 ships. All six crossed with their position transponders switched off, in so-called dark crossings, and over the past three days hidden passages have outnumbered observable ones. Among the ships that exited the strait were a very large crude carrier named Humanity, reported to be carrying about 2 million barrels of Iranian oil, and another tanker, Capetan Andreas, with about 500,000 barrels of Kuwaiti oil products. The figures come as Washington and Tehran dispute whether the Strait of Hormuz is open or closed; the sharp drop in observable traffic shows commercial shipping is moving cautiously and covertly through this vital waterway.

Supertanker rates from the Persian Gulf hit records; daily earnings top 400,000 dollars
Rates for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) on the Persian Gulf to East Asia route hit their highest levels on record this week. According to shipping-market reports, daily earnings on the Persian Gulf to China route topped 400,000 dollars, peaking at about 424,000 dollars a day; for some cargoes transiting the Strait of Hormuz, daily earnings were reported near 470,000 dollars. The surge is driven by the Strait of Hormuz crisis and the withdrawal of war-risk insurers, which has upended the economics of moving crude. The jump raises the cost of delivering Persian Gulf oil to Asian markets and feeds into the final price of imported oil for consuming countries.

European natural gas jumps on Hormuz crisis; Dutch contract tops 50 euros
Natural gas prices in Europe rose on Monday, 13 July 2026, as the Strait of Hormuz crisis intensified. The Dutch TTF front-month contract, Europe's main benchmark, gained about 3.5 percent to roughly 50.4 euros per megawatt-hour, again crossing the 50-euro mark. The move was driven by Iran's declaration that the Strait of Hormuz was closed and Qatar's halt to maritime activity after attacks on tankers. Hormuz carries about one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, including the bulk of Qatar's exports. Goldman Sachs analysts have estimated that a full disruption could push European gas prices up by around 130 percent. The development matters for Iran's economy through the energy market and global oil prices.

Tether nears 180,000 toman in Iran's market, tracking the free-market dollar
The price of Tether (USDT) in Iran's domestic market reached about 180,100 toman on Monday, 13 July 2026, sitting close to the free-market dollar, which had neared the 180,000 toman mark the same day. Tether is the most widely used stablecoin and the main on-ramp for Iranians into the global crypto market, and its toman rate typically tracks the floor of the domestic dollar price. The rise comes as regional military tensions and the U.S. revocation of Iran's temporary oil-sale authorization add pressure to the domestic currency market. Tether's global price held near one dollar as usual, so the change in its toman rate reflects the move in the domestic FX market rather than any swing in the token itself.

US and Iran trade fresh strikes on Monday; dispute over Strait of Hormuz status persists as Brent nears $79
The United States and Iran traded fresh strikes in the early hours of Monday, July 13, 2026, and oil prices jumped on fears of a prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime Information Center keeps Strait of Hormuz threat at its highest 'severe' level, warns of mines and vessel stops
The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) kept the Strait of Hormuz security threat at "severe," its highest category, in its latest advisory on Sunday, 12 July 2026, after earlier lifting it from the "substantial" level. It cited the likelihood of "deliberate hostile action" under current conditions. The advisory pointed to the IRGC Navy hailing and stopping merchant vessels, interference with navigation, and mine hazards near the strait's traffic separation scheme, and told mariners to expect radio contact from naval forces. The warning came even as CENTCOM and the same center had earlier stressed that the strait's southern route remained open to traffic despite Iran's declared "closure." The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20 percent of the world's oil and gas, so an elevated security risk keeps ships' war-risk premiums and the oil price risk premium high, a channel that feeds through global crude prices and inflation expectations into Iran's currency and gold markets.

China's crude oil imports fell in June to their lowest since October 2016, at about 6.4 million b/d
Based on preliminary estimates from tanker-tracking firms Kpler and Vortexa, China's seaborne crude oil imports averaged about 6.4 million barrels per day in June 2026, the lowest level since October 2016 and roughly 8% below May. May imports had been reported at about 7.8 million b/d (nearly 33 million tons), the lowest since October 2017. The world's largest oil importer has cut purchases by about 4 million b/d below usual levels since the Iran war began in late February. China has managed the shortfall by reducing refined-product exports, cutting refinery run rates, and drawing down its commercial crude stockpiles. The drop in Chinese import demand has been one of the factors helping keep global supply and demand balanced and oil prices below $100. Chinese customs data has confirmed the May figures, while the June figure remains preliminary.

OPEC cuts its 2026 global oil demand growth forecast for a second straight month to 970,000 b/d
In its July 2026 Monthly Oil Market Report, OPEC cut its forecast for 2026 global oil demand growth to about 970,000 barrels per day, down from a previous estimate of 1.17 million b/d and the second consecutive monthly downgrade. OPEC attributed part of the cut to a 60,000 b/d reduction in India's demand growth and a roughly 40,000 b/d fall in West Asia consumption. The report estimates that West Asia oil demand in March, the first month of the Iran war, was about 500,000 b/d lower than a year earlier. For 2027, however, OPEC is more optimistic, projecting demand growth of about 1.7 million b/d, an upward revision of roughly 0.2 million b/d from the previous month, driven mainly by China and India.

The Tadawul is the largest equity market in the Persian Gulf region, and its trend is one gauge of how the region's markets are weathering the current tensions.

Wall Street eyes a data-heavy week; US June inflation and big-bank earnings land Tuesday
Wall Street traders head into a data-heavy week overshadowed by the return of US-Iran tensions and renewed energy-price gains. Monday, July 13, carried no major data or earnings and was expected to be quiet. The focus falls on Tuesday, July 14: the release of the US June Consumer Price Index (inflation) and the start of earnings season, with reports from big banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh also testifies before Congress this week. The market's main worry is that with the US-Iran ceasefire over and energy prices rising again, inflationary pressure will persist. The US 10-year Treasury yield was little changed at 4.541% on Friday.

Asian shares slip on Monday as oil jumps; Japan's Nikkei falls 1% and the dollar firms
Asian equity markets fell on Monday, July 13, as tensions in the Persian Gulf intensified and oil prices jumped. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 1%, after shedding 1.7% last week, while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.2%. The US dollar and Treasury yields rose at the same time, with investors nudging up the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike on fears that higher energy costs will revive inflation. The dollar added 0.1% against the yen to 161.96. Brent crude climbed 3.3% in early trade to $78.50 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate rose 3.4% to $73.83. Both costlier oil and a stronger dollar press directly on Iran's currency and gold markets.

Japan's producer inflation rose at fastest pace since early 2023 in June on energy costs and a weaker yen
Japan's producer price index rose about 7% year on year in June 2026, the fastest pace since early 2023. The reading came in above the roughly 6.8% the market had expected and above the roughly 6.6% gain recorded in May. The Bank of Japan released the data on Friday, 10 July. The main driver was higher energy costs stemming from the Strait of Hormuz tensions, alongside a weaker yen, a combination that analysts say strengthens the case for further Bank of Japan rate increases. Asian equity markets also slipped on Monday, 13 July, as oil prices stayed elevated.

Spot gold slips to about $4,081 on Monday as markets await US inflation data
Spot gold slipped nearly 1% to about $4,081 an ounce on Monday, July 13, 2026, down 0.96% from the previous day and a second straight session lower, even as oil prices jumped. Investors stayed cautious ahead of the US June consumer price index, due Tuesday, July 14, a reading that could shape the path of Federal Reserve interest rates and the value of the dollar. Spot gold is down about 5.3% over the past month but still up roughly 22% from a year ago. Gold and coin prices in Iran are set by both the global ounce and the rial exchange rate, which makes the direction of the global ounce a key driver of the domestic market.

Brent crude jumps more than 3% past $78 on Monday as Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate
Brent crude jumped more than 3% past $78 a barrel on Monday, July 13, 2026, reaching about $78.8, a gain of nearly 3.7% from the previous day that snapped a two-day losing streak. The move was attributed to renewed escalation between Iran and the United States and an exchange of strikes around the Strait of Hormuz. About one-fifth of the world's traded oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and vessel-tracking data show large-ship traffic on the southern lane has effectively halted since the middle of last week. Despite Monday's jump, Brent is still down about 5.3% over the past month and up roughly 14% from a year ago. Swings in the global oil price reach Iran's markets through two channels: government oil revenue and exchange-rate expectations.

Oman proposes two separate corridors for the Strait of Hormuz; Araghchi takes the plan to Tehran for a decision
Oman has proposed managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz via two separately controlled routes. According to reports citing a source familiar with the talks, a Southern Corridor running through Omani territorial waters would allow free navigation under prewar conditions, while a Northern Corridor through Iranian waters would require prior approval from Tehran, though no tolls would be charged. The plan was presented on Saturday, 11 July 2026, during Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's visit to Muscat and his meeting with his Omani counterpart. Reports say the Iranian delegation did not approve the proposal and took it to Tehran for review; Oman said the two sides agreed to continue talks at the technical and political levels. The plan has not been finalized. The matter is significant for markets because the Strait of Hormuz carried about 20 percent of the world's oil and gas before the recent tensions. Iran has declared the strait closed, while the United States and the Joint Maritime Information Center say the route remains open. Any mechanism to restore safe passage would bear directly on oil prices and Iran's markets.

CENTCOM: Strait of Hormuz open to all vessels and Iran does not control it; over 140 ships transited in seven days
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday, 12 July 2026, in response to the IRGC Navy's declaration that the Strait of Hormuz was closed, that the international waterway is open to all vessels transiting it lawfully and that "Iran does not control the strait." CENTCOM added that US forces are positioned and prepared to ensure freedom of navigation and that traffic is flowing. According to the statement, more than 140 vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the past seven days, and more than 800 ships carrying over 400 million barrels of crude oil transited the route over roughly the past two months. Earlier on Sunday the IRGC had declared the strait closed "until further notice" after what it called warning shots fired at a ship on an unauthorized route. The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of the world's oil and gas, so any tension there feeds directly into oil prices and Iran's markets.

Bitcoin holds little changed near $63,800 despite third round of US strikes on Iran
Bitcoin was little changed in trading on Sunday, 12 July 2026, holding near $63,800 despite the start of a third round of US military strikes on Iran and the IRGC's declaration that the Strait of Hormuz was closed. It was down about 0.3% over 24 hours and up about 2% on the week. Ether traded near $1,794, up about 2.9%, and XRP near $1.10, up about 1%. With oil, stock and bond markets shut for the weekend, crypto was one of the few markets pricing the escalation in real time. Analysts say investors no longer treat West Asia risk as a crypto-specific event but as a rates event: the main worry is that a jump in oil prices reignites inflation and keeps interest rates elevated. Tether's price inside Iran typically follows these global crypto levels.

US-led maritime center: southern route of Strait of Hormuz stays open despite Iran's closure announcement
The U.S.-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) said on Sunday, July 12, 2026, that despite the Revolutionary Guards' announcement that the Strait of Hormuz was closed, the strait's southern route along the Omani coast remains open and has been expanded to handle two-way vessel traffic. The same advisory kept the maritime security threat level in the strait at "severe". U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) said the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway not subject to the control of any single nation, and that U.S. forces are prepared to preserve freedom of navigation. Under an earlier memorandum between Washington and Tehran, two transit corridors had emerged: a northern route controlled by Iran and a southern route along the Omani coast where the U.S. provides navigation support. Around 20 percent of the world's oil and gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, so keeping it open matters for the region's energy exports and, through them, for Iran's currency and gold markets.

US revokes temporary waiver for Iranian oil sales; transactions must wind down by July 17
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on July 7, 2026 revoked Iran-related General License X (GL X) and issued General License X1 to wind down the previously authorized transactions. GL X, issued temporarily on June 22, had briefly authorized transactions involving Iranian-origin crude oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals, one of Washington's rarest sanctions relaxations in decades. Under the new license, no new transactions involving the production, sale, delivery, or offloading of Iranian oil and petroleum products may occur on or after July 7, and all activity previously authorized must be wound down by 12:01 a.m. EDT on July 17. The move followed the renewed tensions and reciprocal strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, closing the brief legal channel for selling Iranian oil on the global market.

Official dollar rate at Iran's Currency and Gold Exchange Center reaches 149,149 tomans on July 12; euro enters the 170,000 toman channel
The official selling rate of the US dollar at Iran's Currency and Gold Exchange Center rose 169 tomans to 149,149 tomans on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The same day, the euro selling rate jumped 841 tomans into the 170,000 toman channel, reaching 170,609 tomans, while the UAE dirham selling rate reached 40,612 tomans. The increase coincided with rising prices in the free market, where the open dollar has climbed above 179,000 tomans and 18 karat gold has neared 17,640,000 tomans. The gap between the official Exchange Center rate and the free market rate remains wide. The Currency and Gold Exchange Center is the government's official mechanism for supplying foreign currency to importers and designated economic sectors.

Iran fires missiles and drones at Persian Gulf states and Jordan; three missiles land in Jordan and three injured in Qatar
Early on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Iran launched a wave of simultaneous missile and drone attacks toward Persian Gulf states, including Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait, and claimed attacks on Jordan and Oman as well. The strikes came after a fresh round of US airstrikes on Iran and in response to Saturday night's attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, three missiles fired from Iranian territory landed at several locations in Jordan early Sunday, causing no casualties according to Jordanian officials. In Qatar, the Interior Ministry said three people, including one child, were injured by falling shrapnel. Persian Gulf states activated their air defence systems. The escalation has raised regional risk and weighs on oil and currency markets.

Qatar temporarily suspends maritime navigation and all marine activities amid Persian Gulf tensions
Qatar's Ministry of Transport on Sunday, July 12, 2026, announced a temporary suspension of maritime navigation and all marine activities as a precautionary measure to protect public safety. According to the notice, owners and users of all vessels, including leisure boats, fishing boats and jet skis, must refrain from sailing and marine activity until further notice. The suspension does not apply to vessels operating under international maritime conventions. The decision followed escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz, coinciding with reports of missiles and drones fired toward Persian Gulf states. The ministry urged the public to rely only on official channels for updates. The development matters for Iran's market because any disruption to Persian Gulf shipping affects the region's oil and goods export routes.

Hormuz war-risk insurance jumps again; premiums near 5 percent of vessel value
With escalating tensions and attacks on three commercial vessels in recent days, war-risk insurance premiums for tankers and ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz jumped again, reaching about 5 percent of a vessel's value as the new market norm; earlier in the conflict the rate had briefly climbed to around 10 percent. At that level, a single transit for a tanker worth roughly 100 million dollars can cost millions of dollars in insurance, versus a fraction of one percent before the conflict began. The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center raised its advisory for crossing the strait from "substantial" to "severe," the highest category. War-risk cover is typically sold on a seven-day basis and repriced every 24 to 48 hours. Higher insurance costs and reduced traffic directly affect Iran's oil exports and the flow of goods in the region.

Oman summons Iran's ambassador in formal protest over drone strikes on Musandam
Oman's Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mousa Farhang, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, and handed him a formal letter of protest over drone strikes on areas in the Musandam and Al Wusta governorates. According to Muscat Daily, Khalid bin Hashel al Musalhi, Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, expressed the Sultanate's strong dissatisfaction and stressed the need to uphold the principles of state sovereignty and good neighborliness. Oman has been one of the main mediators working to contain the US-Iran conflict and preserve maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and the summons could weigh on the ongoing talks over the strait.

CENTCOM says third wave hit about 140 Iranian military targets, over 300 across three nights
The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday, July 12, 2026, that its third wave of strikes this week hit about 140 Iranian military targets using missiles and drones. CENTCOM said the strikes began at 7:15 p.m. US Eastern time on Saturday evening and targeted missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks and coastal surveillance locations. It added that across three nights of strikes this week it has hit more than 300 targets in total. The strikes followed what the US attributed to IRGC forces firing on a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The recent military tensions have been the main driver of swings in gold, dollar and oil prices in Iran's market.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister urges restraint and de-escalation in call with Araghchi
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a phone call with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the evolving regional situation. According to Pakistan's foreign ministry, Dar urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue de-escalation in line with the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding reached in June. Dar described dialogue and diplomacy as the only way to resolve disputes and achieve lasting peace and stability, and reaffirmed Islamabad's readiness to play a constructive role in the region. The two sides agreed to remain in close contact. The call came amid sharply rising tensions between Iran and the United States, after Iran again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, a waterway whose developments feed directly into oil, currency and gold prices inside Iran.
