Iran's Quarter Coin Premium Hits 7,391,000 Tomans; Four Quarter Coins Cost 23 Million Tomans More Than One Emami Coin of the Same Gold Weight (Sunday, 2 August 2026)

Iran's coin market put a plain contradiction on the board on Sunday, 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405). The premium on the quarter coin (rob sekkeh) reached 7,391,000 tomans, while the premium on the full Emami coin stood at 3,522,000 tomans the same day. The quarter coin holds one fourth of the Emami coin's gold, yet its premium is more than twice as large.

That gap is not an abstraction. It lands directly in a small saver's basket: buying four quarter coins costs 210,400,000 tomans, while a single Emami coin holding almost exactly the same gold traded at 187,000,000 tomans. The difference is 23,400,000 tomans, roughly 12.5 percent more to end up with the same few grams of gold.

Background

A coin premium (hobab, literally "bubble") is the gap between a coin's market price and the intrinsic value of the gold inside it. A full Bahar Azadi or Emami coin weighs 8.13 grams and a quarter coin 2.03 grams, so four quarter coins weigh almost exactly as much as one full coin. When the prices of the two do not line up, the difference sits in the premium, not in the gold.

What matters is that the Emami premium has been shrinking. Today the same figure is 3,522,000 tomans and under 2 percent, roughly half. Over that same stretch the quarter coin's premium has not compressed at all; it has stayed in double digits.

The price backdrop is clear. The head of the Tehran Gold and Jewellery Union told ISNA on Saturday, 1 August 2026 that despite a 19 dollar weekly fall in the global gold ounce to 4,043 dollars, the domestic market rose over the past week on the back of a higher exchange rate. In that week the Emami coin gained 4,800,000 tomans, the half coin 1,100,000 tomans and the quarter coin 1,000,000 tomans.

Today's numbers

The ladder is perfectly ordered: the smaller the piece, the heavier the premium. From 0.5 percent on the Bahar Azadi to 17.5 percent on the gram coin is a spread of roughly 35 times. The quarter coin alone sits more than seven times above the Emami.

An independent live reading of the market at 13:35 the same day points the same way: a quarter coin premium of 6,813,000 tomans or 14.91 percent, a half coin premium of 3.16 percent and an Emami premium of 0.29 percent. The figures do not match the table exactly, because different references take their snapshot at different moments and compute intrinsic value slightly differently, but the direction and the ordering of the ladder are identical in both: the quarter coin in the 14 to 15 percent band, the full coin between zero and 2 percent.

Drivers

Minting cost spread over less weight. Striking a quarter coin costs broadly what striking a full coin costs in labour, dies and process, but that cost is spread across one fourth of the gold. This single factor creates the durable part of the small-denomination premium and explains why the premium ladder always runs inversely to weight.

Retail and gift demand. The quarter and gram coins are the cheapest entry tickets into the coin market and for many buyers the only affordable pieces. Gift and ceremonial use also separates their demand from investment demand: a gift buyer is not sensitive to the price per gram, only to the total price of the piece.

The structure of official supply. Where official supply arrives most directly, the premium drains fastest; the small denominations get less of that supply pressure.

The exchange rate, this week's shared driver. Domestic markets this week took their cue from the exchange rate rather than the global ounce. The ounce fell 19 dollars over the past week while the rial price of coins rose.

Outlook

This section is analysis rather than reported figures. A small-denomination premium has two components: a structural one that comes from minting cost and does not disappear even when the market calms, and a sentiment one that rises and falls with periodic demand and currency expectations. The compression of the Emami premium from about 3.3 percent on 19 July to under 2 percent today suggests the sentiment component is draining out of the large piece, while the same has not happened in the quarter coin. As long as that divergence holds, the cost per gram of gold stays higher for the buyer of a small piece than for the buyer of a large one.
