Hassan Qashqavi, spokesperson for the presiding board of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 (25 Shahrivar 1405) that the Strait of Hormuz will absolutely not reopen until Iran's conditions, including the lifting of the naval blockade, are met. According to EcoIran, citing Tasnim, he added that lasting peace requires full deterrence, and durable deterrence requires raising the cost for whoever started the war. Qashqavi also pointed to Austria's move to block Iran's Atomic Energy Organization chief from attending the IAEA General Conference, calling it inconsistent with US demands for Iranian cooperation on inspecting bombed nuclear sites.
