Habibollah Taherkhani, deputy minister of roads and urban development, said on Tuesday, 6 Mordad 1405 (28 July 2026), at a ceremony marking National Skills Week that over the past year, following earlier memorandums of understanding, land required for the construction of 94,000 housing units had been made available to industries. He said there is now readiness to create new capacity for up to 200,000 units to support the country's industries in providing worker housing.
Referring to the construction sector's place in the national economy, Taherkhani said the industry alone accounts for 12 percent of employment and roughly 5 to 7 percent of gross domestic product.
He also announced the formation of the first industry assessment centre in cooperation with the Construction Engineering Organisation and the Technical and Vocational Training Organisation, saying the step was taken to build a coherent framework for raising the skills of construction workers and certifying their competence. According to him, one existing problem in social security insurance for construction workers has been the absence of accurate assessment of the sector's workers and their skills.
