The US Treasury's OFAC issued Counter Narcotics, Counter Terrorism, Cuba-related and Iran-related designations on Thursday, August 20, 2026 (29 Mordad 1405). Per Al Jazeera and Donya-e-Eqtesad, of 10 individuals and entities designated, three Turkish nationals were named over Iran links and seven, including one Iranian national, over Hezbollah links. Treasury Secretary Bessent separately told CNBC that Washington would impose further sanctions on Iran.

IAEA Director General's Planned Visit to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has a visit to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant planned for 20 and 21 August 2026 (29 and 30 Mordad 1405). The planned visit follows a drone attack a day earlier on a bus stop used by plant staff in Enerhodar, which Grossi described as the most serious incident in the plant's history.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed a trilateral defense pact known as the "Mecca Pact" in Mecca on Friday, August 7, 2026 (16 Mordad 1405), under which an armed attack on any one of the three states is treated as an attack on all three. The pact was signed amid the US-Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz shipping crisis.

US Senate Passes Russia and Iran Energy Sanctions Bill (Graham Act)
The US Senate passed the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026" by a vote of 86 to 11 on Friday, August 7, 2026 (16 Mordad 1405). The bill sets 100 percent tariffs on major importers of Russian oil and gas and targets clandestine maritime networks used to evade Western sanctions. It now heads to the House of Representatives, which is not expected to vote before early September due to the congressional summer recess.

US Treasury Sanctions Iran-Linked Crypto Exchanges Shelbit and Aban Tether
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned two digital asset exchanges used by Tehran, Shelbit and Aban Tether, on 7 August 2026 (16 Mordad 1405), along with Siavash Kayvanpour, described as the operator of a multi-jurisdiction network of front companies, under Executive Order 13224. Treasury said IRGC-linked crypto addresses sent more than $1 million to Shelbit exchange addresses, while more than $2 million flowed from Shelbit back to IRGC addresses.
