Illegal Crypto Mining in Iran Consumes 3,750 Megawatts; More Than 13,000 Unlicensed Farms Identified

According to Boursenews, published Friday, 13 Shahrivar 1405 (September 4, 2026), more than 13,000 unlicensed cryptocurrency mining farms have been identified in Iran, with power consumption reaching about 3,750 megawatts, equal to the electricity use of four Iranian provinces and about 8 percent of residential power consumption. Per the report, illegal crypto mining costs the country close to 2.5 billion dollars a year, and authorities have so far identified and seized more than 300,000 unlicensed mining rigs or units operating during restricted hours, with estimated consumption of about 1,300 megawatts. Boursenews writes that more than 70 percent of the discovered farms were located in residential areas, and state utility company Tavanir said identified violators, including illegal miners, will be barred from energy subsidies for one year and billed for their electricity use at the unsubsidized free market rate. According to the report, citizen reports of abnormal power use, equipment noise and voltage drops have played an effective role in identifying these facilities.

Illegal Crypto Miners Are Consuming Power Equal to Four Iranian Provinces

Iranian officials say more than 13,000 illegal cryptocurrency mining farms are operating across the country, drawing about 3,750 megawatts of electricity, equal to the consumption of four provinces and nearly 8 percent of total household power use. Donya e Eqtesad reports the unauthorized mining causes roughly $2.5 billion in annual losses. More than 300,000 illegal mining rigs have been identified and seized so far, with an estimated combined load of about 1,300 megawatts, more than the capacity of the Bushehr nuclear plant. Over 70 percent of the discovered farms were located in residential areas. A spokesman for parliament's presiding board recently announced fast track approval of a bill to combat illegal electricity use for crypto mining. State utility Tavanir said identified violators will lose energy subsidies for one year and be billed at the unsubsidized free market electricity rate.

Citing Power Shortage, Parliament Fast-Tracks Bill Against Illegal Crypto Miners

Iran's parliament voted in an open session on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 (11 Shahrivar 1405), to fast-track a bill adding Article 687 (repeated) to the Islamic Penal Code, targeting illegal use of electricity for cryptocurrency mining. Abbas Goudarzi, spokesman for parliament's presiding board, told Donya-e-Eqtesad the bill is necessary given the country's energy shortage, noting experts estimate one mining rig consumes as much power as 10 households. He said roughly 13,000 illegal mining farms have been identified nationwide, along with thousands of unauthorized mining rigs.

US Treasury Sanctions Crypto Exchanges Aban Tether and Shelbit Over Iran Sanctions Evasion

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the cryptocurrency exchange Aban Tether for conducting transactions with previously sanctioned Iranian exchanges. According to Arzdigital, the US agency alleges Aban Tether processed millions of dollars in transactions linked to sanctioned exchanges Nobitex, Wallex, Bitpin and Ramzinex, and designated the platform under Executive Order 13902, signed in 2020. The Treasury simultaneously sanctioned the UAE-based exchange Shelbit for facilitating sanctions evasion and moving assets tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; the agency alleges Shelbit received more than 1 million dollars from IRGC-linked addresses and transferred over 2 million dollars to wallets it controls. An individual named Siavash Keyvanpour, along with a network of companies in Georgia, Poland and the UAE, was also added to the sanctions list. According to Ecoiran, citing Zoomit, the action follows the sanctioning of four exchanges, Nobitex, Wallex, Bitpin and Ramzinex, in June, and is described as part of a broader Washington effort to limit Iran's use of stablecoins in cross-border transactions.

Hemmati: US Sanctions on Iranian Crypto Exchanges Are "Publicity Fodder"

Central Bank of Iran Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said on Saturday, August 8, 2026 (17 Mordad 1405), that recent US Treasury sanctions on Iranian crypto exchanges are American "publicity fodder" and have no connection to the central bank. According to Ecoiran, citing Hamshahri Online, the US Treasury sanctioned another Iranian crypto exchange the same day, following its sanctioning of four Iranian crypto exchanges about two months earlier over alleged assistance in circumventing sanctions through ties to the central bank. Hemmati said the funds involved are "in our own hands and we are using them," adding that Iran has supplied more foreign currency this year than in the same period last year.

AbanTether Says US Sanction Creates No New Restriction, User Assets Remain Secure

Iranian crypto exchange AbanTether issued a statement on Saturday, 17 Mordad 1405 (8 August 2026), a day after the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned it on August 7, to clarify the action for users. The statement said OFAC designated AbanTether solely because it had processed transactions with other already sanctioned Iranian exchanges, including Nobitex, Wallex, Bitpin and Ramzinex, under Executive Order 13902 for operating in Iran's financial sector. AbanTether said this order differs from Executive Order 13224 and does not create any new restriction on US companies dealing with Iran, so the exchange's operations continue as before, adding that the security of user assets remains its priority.

US Treasury Sanctions Two Iran-Linked Crypto Exchanges, Shelbit and Aban Tether

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned two digital asset exchanges used by Tehran, Shelbit and Aban Tether, on Friday, August 7, 2026 (16 Mordad 1405), along with Siavash Kayvanpour, described as the ringleader of a multi-jurisdiction network of front companies. According to the Treasury's official statement, the action targets billion-dollar laundering networks that maintained Iran's covert access to the international financial system and supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Treasury said digital currency addresses belonging to the IRGC sent more than $1 million in digital assets to Shelbit exchange addresses, while more than $2 million flowed from Shelbit addresses to IRGC wallets. Aban Tether has processed millions of dollars in transactions involving sanctioned Iranian exchanges, including Nobitex, Wallex, Bitpin and Ramzinex. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, "Whether in dollars, rials, or crypto, Treasury will hunt down and dismantle the illicit financial networks that keep the regime afloat."

Tavanir CEO says Iran's 5 percent share of global crypto mining has declined as 27 billion tomans paid in miner detection rewards

Mohammad Allahdad, chief executive of Iran's power utility Tavanir, said on Thursday, August 6, 2026 (15 Mordad 1405) on the sidelines of the nationwide Mahtab plan drill for smart management of power grid losses in Aligudarz, that Iran's 5 percent share of global cryptocurrency mining has declined following the company's measures to reduce grid losses. According to Arzdigital, citing Tejarat News, he said 27 billion tomans in rewards have been paid to citizens for detecting and identifying unauthorized crypto mining equipment, a figure that has grown significantly. Allahdad credited security, military and judicial bodies alongside grid inspectors for effectively identifying violators, and named unauthorized power draws for garden villas, livestock units and some trades among the factors damaging the country's power grid. He warned that given current conditions, Iran may face natural gas consumption restrictions this summer and even this winter.

Thirty eight smuggled crypto mining rigs worth 5.8 billion tomans seized in Ardabil

Brigadier General Javad Taghavi, police commander of Iran's Ardabil province, said on Wednesday 5 August 2026 that officers from the province's economic security police had seized 38 smuggled cryptocurrency mining rigs as part of a nationwide operation against smuggled miners and unauthorised mining farms and premises. He said the operation was carried out with police units and 15 teams from the electricity authority, and involved 125 inspections. Experts valued the seizures at 5.8 billion rials, equivalent to 5.8 billion tomans. Two premises were sealed, two people were arrested and two cases were opened for legal proceedings. Cryptocurrency mining using subsidised electricity and smuggled imported rigs has for years been a pressure point on Iran's power grid, and sweeps against unauthorised farms are run periodically across the country, particularly during the peak consumption months of summer.

Sahmino's own independent price data recorded bitcoin at $64,236 at 01:15 the same morning, consistent with the Arzdigital figure. Tether Gold (XAUt) traded at $4,057.4, close to the global gold ounce range at that hour. Tether remains the most widely used digital asset for currency transfers in Iran, and its toman rate is one of the closely watched indicators of the country's foreign exchange market.

Tavanir says crypto mining rigs found at industrial units will bring licence suspension or revocation

Mohammad Allahdad, managing director of Tavanir, Iran's power generation and distribution company, said on Monday 3 August 2026 (12 Mordad 1405), during a visit to Zanjan province coinciding with the fifteenth nationwide Mahtab drill, that under new decisions the discovery of cryptocurrency mining rigs at industrial units will bring serious restrictions including suspension or revocation of those units' operating licences, on top of legal action. He said the Mahtab scheme is aimed at the smart management of non technical electricity losses, with a target of cutting 3,500 megawatts from the national grid load by the end of the summer. He said unauthorised connections, informal settlements, unlicensed water wells, improper use of subsidised tariffs and illegal crypto mining are among the main sources of pressure on the power grid and of the worsening energy imbalance. Allahdad added that the summer peak load has been passed thanks to consumption management programmes, but that reducing grid losses and tackling unauthorised consumption must continue with the same rigour so the network enters the winter peak period prepared.

Tether retreats to the 191,000 toman channel in Iran while bitcoin holds above $63,000

Iran's crypto market opened a relatively balanced session on Sunday 2 August 2026, equivalent to 11 Mordad 1405, despite an escalation in tensions the previous night. The main domestic development was a fall in tether, which traded at 191,120 toman, down 1.65 percent from 24 hours earlier. The decline followed sharp gains in preceding days. In global markets, bitcoin traded at $63,438, up 0.57 percent over 24 hours and holding above the $63,000 area. Ethereum rose 0.27 percent to $1,876, while Binance Coin moved against the broader market, falling 1.10 percent to $584. Among altcoins, Cardano was the day's strongest performer with a 9.28 percent gain, followed by Chainlink at 2.44 percent and XRP at 1.99 percent. Dogecoin rose 0.56 percent. According to the report, traders are waiting above all for fresh macroeconomic triggers, particularly signals on US monetary policy, with the Federal Reserve's recent decision to hold interest rates steady still the single largest influence on crypto trading.

Iran's parliament moves a two-urgency bill against illegal crypto miners; estimated draw about 2,000 MW

Ahmad Moradi, head of the electricity committee of the Iranian parliament's energy commission, said on Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405) that parliament has set in motion a two-urgency bill for firmer action against illegal cryptocurrency miners. The Mehr news agency carried the remarks, citing the Ministry of Energy. According to Moradi, estimates indicate that about 2,000 MW of the country's electricity capacity is consumed by unauthorised miners. Moradi, who represents Hormozgan province, said the use of subsidised electricity by some industrial units and individuals for unauthorised crypto mining is a leading source of strain on the grid and of the worsening power imbalance, and directly damages production and industry. He added that the two-urgency bill is designed to close legal gaps in tackling electricity theft by unauthorised mining rigs and to introduce deterrent penalties. He also pointed to the Ministry of Energy's "Mahtab" scheme, running in several provinces, which focuses on identifying units in industrial estates that divert part of their electricity supply to unauthorised activity in breach of their operating licences.

Tether reaches 194,345 tomans on the week's first trading morning, above the latest free market dollar rate

The price of tether in Iran's domestic market rose on the morning of Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405). According to Sahmino's price board, the stablecoin stood at 194,345 tomans at 09:29, up 0.39 percent from the previous reading. The newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad, in a report the same morning, also recorded tether climbing to around 194,000 tomans in overnight trading. That is above the latest recorded free market dollar rate; the dollar closed at 192,400 tomans on Thursday 30 July. Tether had been trading around 193,200 tomans on Thursday 30 July, meaning it has risen roughly half a percent across the weekend break. Iran's cash currency and gold markets are closed on Thursdays and Fridays, so over that gap tether effectively serves as the only live gauge of the exchange rate, and its trading above physical dollar notes is generally read as a sign of precautionary demand in the domestic market. Donya-e-Eqtesad set the increase alongside fresh threats directed at Iran and a Wall Street Journal report on the possibility of military operations beginning. Tether's global price held near one dollar as usual, so the move in its toman rate reflects the domestic currency market rather than any swing in the token itself.

US sanctions two Iranian marine insurance entities tied to the Strait of Hormuz over a bitcoin-accepting scheme

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned two Iranian marine insurance entities on Friday 31 July 2026: the Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and the HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority. The Treasury accused the two of selling insurance coverage to vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and funnelling the proceeds to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to the Treasury statement, the Hormuz Safe platform was developed by Iran's Ministry of Economy and "accepts payment in Bitcoin and other digital assets as part of the regime's attempts to bypass Western sanctions". The Treasury described the arrangement as extortion rather than insurance, saying the risks the policies covered, such as vessel seizures, "are overwhelmingly created by Iran itself". According to CoinDesk, the policies were approved by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, an IRGC-backed body the Treasury designated in May. Both firms were sanctioned under an executive order covering Iran's petroleum and petrochemical sectors. The practical effect is that US persons are barred from dealing with the two entities, and foreign firms that transact with them risk secondary sanctions; CoinDesk noted that payments in bitcoin carry the same exposure as payments through the banking system. CoinDesk first reported the existence of the plan on 18 May 2026, based on Fars News accounts; at the time the platform's website showed only a landing page and the outlet could not verify whether it was operational or whether any cargo owners had used it. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy chokepoints, and traffic through it has thinned in recent weeks.

Reuters report: Dubai-based crypto exchange linked to a $4 billion Iran sanctions-evasion network

Reuters reported in an investigation on Friday 31 July 2026 that a large illegal gambling network based in Dubai has moved millions of dollars' worth of cryptocurrency through what the report describes as a $4 billion Iranian sanctions-evasion operation. According to the report, the network, with more than 2,000 platforms, is considered one of the world's largest and is a major customer of Shelbit, an unlicensed crypto exchange run by Siavash Kayvanpour, an Iranian expatriate. Reuters wrote that Shelbit is the hub of the operation, through which the gambling network, Iran's central bank and other sanctioned Iranian entities have had access to global crypto markets. The Central Bank of Iran has been under US counterterrorism sanctions since 2019. According to the same report, Shelbit has moved hundreds of millions of dollars to some of the most prominent crypto companies, including Binance. Binance said in response that Shelbit had never held an account on its platform and that transactions linked to Shelbit were not considered high risk; the exchange added that it investigated users associated with Shelbit, froze the relevant accounts and reported them to law enforcement. John Wojcik, a senior analyst at TRM Labs and a former researcher at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, called it the biggest Iranian illegal gambling network discovered to date. Rich Sanders, an independent blockchain researcher, described Shelbit as an operation tied to the Revolutionary Guard Corps, but Reuters stated explicitly that it could not confirm whether the Guard directly controls Shelbit or the gambling network. According to the report, Shelbit interacted directly with Iran's central bank and with Nobitex, the Iranian exchange sanctioned by the United States earlier this year. Crypto rails are one of the channels under scrutiny in discussions of sanctions and currency transfers for Iranian market participants.

Official warning over rented crypto exchange accounts: the account holder is treated as an accomplice in money laundering

The social affairs and crime prevention department of the Alborz province judiciary issued an official notice, reported on Tuesday 6 Mordad 1405 (28 July 2026), warning of a new wave of fraud operating behind advertisements offering high paying work from home. The method described is that fraudsters ask job seekers to register with an online crypto exchange and complete identity verification using their own documents, such as a national ID card and birth certificate, and then rent the management of that account in exchange for small weekly or monthly payments. The rented account is used to buy cryptocurrency and launder stolen funds. In law the account holder is responsible for every transaction carried out and, where an offence occurs, is treated as an accomplice. At the same time the cyber police of Hamadan province launched a campaign titled think first, then click, warning of a marked rise in online fraud cases as Arbaeen travel begins. According to that warning, money stolen from pilgrims is laundered through the same rented crypto exchange accounts.

Lorestan power utility says it has seized 152 illegal crypto mining rigs since the start of the Iranian year

Shirzad Jamshidi, chief executive of the Lorestan Power Distribution Company, said on Monday, 27 July 2026, that the company's operations and inspection teams have identified, found and confiscated 152 unauthorised cryptocurrency mining rigs across the province since the start of the current Iranian year. He said that during the critical summer period of peak electricity demand, electricity theft and unauthorised crypto mining are not merely an economic offence but, in his words, an attack on the country's energy security, because every illegal mining rig consumes power needed by homes, medical centres, industry and public services, and reduces the stability of the grid. According to Jamshidi, beyond confiscating the equipment, the electricity supply to these sites is cut and offenders face legal action. He also noted that energy intensive industries remain obliged to meet their legal duties, including building their own dedicated power plants.

Greater Tehran's power distribution company asks residents to text in unauthorised crypto-mining sites, with cash rewards for useful tips

The Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company on Monday, 27 July 2026 (5 Mordad 1405), asked residents to report by text message the addresses of unauthorised crypto-mining sites as well as unauthorised or unusual electricity consumption. According to the company's announcement, carried by Mehr News Agency, useful reports qualify for a cash reward. Unauthorised crypto mining has for years been cited by Iranian power-industry officials as a factor in the country's consumption imbalance, because mining rigs draw subsidised electricity around the clock. The appeal was issued at the height of summer and alongside incentive schemes to cut consumption. Tavanir had previously announced that low-use subscribers who cut consumption by at least 10 percent qualify for a 30 percent discount on their electricity bill, and Tehran's peak-hour electricity use has fallen by more than 10 percent. For participants in Iran's crypto market, access to legal electricity and its tariff is one of the main variables in the economics of domestic mining.

US Treasury widens sanctions on Babak Zanjani network: 4 individuals and 9 companies in Iran, Turkiye and the UAE

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Friday, 24 July 2026 (2 Mordad 1405) designated four individuals and nine entities that it says form key components of Babak Zanjani's sanctions evasion network. The designations were made under Executive Order 13902. The action targets, on one side, the Iran-based "Dot One" conglomerate: holding company Dot One Value Creation Group, DotOne Gold (a gold bar minter and custodian linked to a gold-backed token), DotOne Rail, DotOne Barter, DotOne Airlines and DotOne Trip. On the other side it targets companies supporting the Zedcex and Zedxion crypto exchanges: Istanbul-based fintech Zedpay, and Dubai-based Zedx DMCC and BZ Diamond. The designated individuals are Mehdi Rezazadeh (chairperson of Zedpay), Sukhrob Oimakhmadov (manager of Zedx), Bahareh Morteza Zanjani (Babak Zanjani's sister and manager of BZ Diamond) and Solmaz Bani. OFAC had earlier, on 30 January 2026 (10 Bahman 1404), designated Zanjani himself along with Zedcex and Zedxion, both registered in the UK. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington will continue cutting off economic access for Iranian regime elites and their financiers.

Tether eases to 191,206 tomans on Saturday, staying above the banknote dollar

The price of tether in Iran's domestic market fell about 0.31 percent from the previous day, from 191,800 to 191,206 tomans, on Saturday, 25 July 2026 (3 Mordad 1405). The rate is based on a report from the Nobitex exchange; some other domestic sources recorded the same day's rate at around 192,200 tomans, a difference stemming from variation between exchanges and the time of quotation. Notably, the two markets fell at different speeds: tether slipped only about 0.3 percent, while the open-market dollar dropped roughly 1.8 percent the same day, standing around 189,700 tomans on Sahmino's price board as of 19:59 on Saturday. That left tether trading about 1,500 tomans above the banknote dollar. Tether is the most widely used stablecoin and the main on-ramp for Iranians into the global crypto market. Its global price held near one dollar as usual, so the move in its toman rate reflects the domestic currency market rather than any swing in the token itself.

Iran to cut power for one week to one month at sites with illegal crypto miners, household and commercial outages from next week

Jafar Ghaem-Panah, the Iranian president's executive deputy, told reporters in Alborz province on Thursday 23 July 2026 (1 Mordad 1405) that the government will act firmly against unauthorised cryptocurrency mining. Under the decision taken, where mining equipment is found, power to the site will be cut for one week in previously identified cases and for up to one month in new cases. He said that at a time when southern provinces face temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius and industry has a serious need for electricity, misuse of subsidised power for crypto mining will not be permitted, and he asked those active in the field to refrain from illegal operations. Ghaem-Panah also announced that planned power outages in the household and commercial sectors will be applied from next week, scheduled by the Tavanir company and lasting about two to three hours, with details to be announced by energy ministry officials. He added that operating hours at some cement plants have been moved to the grid's off-peak periods, including 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., and that shifting operating days is on the agenda for some steel units and industrial estates.

Tether freezes about $131 million in crypto linked to Iran's central bank

After the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added four wallets tied to Iran's central bank to its sanctions list on 14 July 2026, Tether froze about $131 million of USDT stablecoin held in those wallets. According to published reports, the move brought the total blocked USDT linked to Iran's central bank to roughly $475 million. Because Tether controls the USDT contracts, it can block an address and halt transfers of its tokens, even though the balance remains visible on the public blockchain. The sanctions followed the collapse of the ceasefire and the resumption of strikes.

Tether traded around 192,000 tomans in Iran on Friday, above the latest free-market dollar rate

Tether, the dollar stablecoin, traded around 192,000 tomans on Iranian crypto exchanges on Friday, July 17, 2026 (26 Tir 1405). Domestic sources put the rate between roughly 191,700 and 192,400 tomans, up close to 2% from 24 hours earlier. With Iran's cash currency and gold markets closed on Thursdays and Fridays, tether effectively serves as the only live gauge of the exchange rate over the weekend. At about 192,000 tomans it sits above the latest free-market dollar rate (around 188,600 tomans at Thursday's close on 25 Tir). The gap may signal precautionary demand amid the escalating Iran-U.S. military conflict, as traders lacking an open official currency market use the stablecoin to hedge weekend risk.

Tether nears 180,000 toman in Iran's market, tracking the free-market dollar

The price of Tether (USDT) in Iran's domestic market reached about 180,100 toman on Monday, 13 July 2026, sitting close to the free-market dollar, which had neared the 180,000 toman mark the same day. Tether is the most widely used stablecoin and the main on-ramp for Iranians into the global crypto market, and its toman rate typically tracks the floor of the domestic dollar price. The rise comes as regional military tensions and the U.S. revocation of Iran's temporary oil-sale authorization add pressure to the domestic currency market. Tether's global price held near one dollar as usual, so the change in its toman rate reflects the move in the domestic FX market rather than any swing in the token itself.
