Import of 3 to 5 Year Old Used Cars Freed Up; Annual Cap Set at 20,000 Vehicles

Farshad Ebrahimpour, a member of the presiding board of Iran's parliament, said on Thursday, August 20, 2026 (29 Mordad 1405), according to Boursenews, that under a parliamentary resolution, imports of used passenger cars aged 3 to 5 years, previously banned, have now been freed up. He said the cap on passenger car imports for the current year has been set at 20,000 vehicles, and that these cars, costing less than new zero kilometer vehicles, can meet part of consumer demand in the market.

Ebrahimpour stressed the need to draw on foreign currency held outside the official supply chain, including deposits belonging to applicants or others, to fund car imports without adding further pressure on the country's currency reserves. He also called for simplifying after sales service procedures for these vehicles so that complex requirements do not, in practice, obstruct the imports.
