Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said some non-residential sites in the city caught fire after Russia struck the Ukrainian capital with ballistic missiles. According to Al Jazeera, citing Kyiv Independent reporters on the ground, multiple explosions were heard in the city at 1:18am local time on Thursday (22:18 GMT on Wednesday), and Klitschko instructed people to seek shelter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned on Wednesday that a massive Russian attack was likely, and said the safety of Ukrainians depended on the willingness of allies to supply anti-missile defences. Returning from the United States, he said Donald Trump had agreed to give Ukraine licences to make Patriot missiles; his White House meeting with Trump lasted a little over an hour.
The point that matters for energy and defence markets is that, according to Al Jazeera, only US Patriot systems are capable of shooting down Russian ballistic missiles, yet Ukraine is short of PAC-3 interceptors, a shortage that has worsened since the US and Israeli war on Iran began in February 2026. That same inventory squeeze sits behind the Pentagon's new contract with Lockheed Martin.

13th Islamic Treasury Bond Auction Sees Weak Demand; Only One of Four Symbols Sold
