18-Karat Gold Nears 20 Million Toman Mark as Emami Coin Tops 198 Million Tomans
Aug 20, 2026
According to the Tala va Arz (tgju.org) price network at 23:00 on Thursday, August 20, 2026 (29 Mordad 1405), the price of 18-karat gold reached 19,852,700 tomans per gram, up 4.05 percent (773,000 tomans) from a week earlier. Earlier the same day, at 20:12, Arzdigital reported, citing the Tehran Gold and Jewelry Union's site, that 18-karat gold, up more than 2 percent over the prior 24 hours, was only 50,000 tomans short of the 20 million toman mark, while the Emami gold coin, up more than 4 million tomans, had reached about 198,700,000 tomans; Sahmino's own internal data had recorded the Emami coin at 16:59 Thursday at about 199,540,000 tomans, up 0.77 percent on the day.\n\nPer Arzdigital, the domestic rise came as global gold reclaimed the 4,500 dollar per ounce resistance level. Earlier that same Thursday, global gold had pulled back 0.6 percent to 4,495.69 dollars on investor profit taking, after jumping more than four percent on Wednesday. Market analysts said global gold holding above the 4,500 dollar level would likely keep upward pressure on Iran's domestic gold and coin market.

Global Gold Retreats 0.6 Percent on Profit Taking as US Debt Tops 40 Trillion Dollars for First Time
The spot price of global gold fell 0.6 percent on Thursday, August 20, 2026 (29 Mordad 1405), to 4,495.69 dollars an ounce, after earlier touching 4,525.79 dollars, its highest level since June 2. According to Boursenews, the pullback followed gold's more than four percent jump on Wednesday, as investors booked profits; US gold futures rose 0.2 percent to 4,553.30 dollars in the same session. Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at tastylive, said that after such a large jump, markets need to digest and consolidate the move, and that if prices hold above the 4,400 to 4,500 dollar range, gold's uptrend will likely continue. At the same time, total outstanding US government debt topped 40 trillion dollars for the first time. Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, said growing concern over US fiscal stability and debt was a positive factor for gold prices. Citing Reuters and the CME FedWatch tool, traders now see a 67 percent probability the Federal Reserve holds rates steady next month against a 33 percent chance of a hike. Among other precious metals, silver rose 0.2 percent to 67.07 dollars, platinum fell 1.3 percent to 1,802.29 dollars, and palladium fell 0.2 percent to 1,328.06 dollars.

Deputy Economy Ministry Official: Of 400 Licensed Gold Platforms, Only About 9 Are Genuinely Active and Credible
Mohammadreza Hajijafari, deputy head of the Business Center at Iran's Ministry of Economy, said in remarks carried by Fars News Agency early on Thursday, 29 Mordad 1405 (August 20, 2026), that around 400 gold sales platforms currently hold licenses, but only about 9 of them are seriously and genuinely active in the market. He said oversight to prevent these platforms from selling gold they do not hold is currently done manually, through inquiries to the cyber police and regulatory bodies, and that the main fix is for the Central Bank to launch its supervisory system as soon as possible; an initial rollout has taken place, though the legal deadline for its completion was Bahman 1404 (February 2026). Hajijafari advised consumers to check for an e trust symbol and registration in Iran's official business information database before buying gold through these platforms.

Global Gold Breaches $4,500 for the First Time in Two Months
The global gold price hit its highest level since early June early on Thursday, 29 Mordad 1405 (August 20, 2026), breaking out of a summer lull. According to Arzdigital, gold traded around 4,475 dollars that morning, more than 130 dollars above the prior day's dip, and went on to touch about 4,507 dollars. Analysts attributed the jump to the US Treasury's liquidity support announcement and a simultaneous weakening of the dollar. Data from Alanchand.com, updated shortly after, showed global gold trading around 4,499.97 dollars. Sahmino's own data recorded the global gold ounce rate at 07:29 Thursday at 4,499.88 dollars, down 0.45% from the prior day, indicating the metal eased slightly after its brief move above the 4,500 dollar level.

Wells Fargo Cuts Its 2026 Gold Price Forecast for the Third Time
Investment firm Wells Fargo has cut its gold price forecast for the third time in 2026. According to Arzdigital, the firm now expects gold to trade between $4,900 and $5,100 an ounce by year end, down from its previous forecast of $5,300 to $5,500. Its 2027 target was also cut, to $5,400 to $5,600 from $5,800 to $6,000. In February 2026, Wells Fargo had set a 2026 target of $6,100 to $6,300, expecting Federal Reserve rate cuts and continued central bank buying to support gold, but the Fed did not cut rates and central bank gold purchases slowed. Gold, which hit a record near $5,594 in January, has corrected in the months since, trading around $4,397 on August 18 (27 Mordad). Wells Fargo cited rising US Treasury yields, a stronger dollar, profit taking after the earlier sharp rally, outflows from gold ETFs, expectations of tighter Fed policy, and temporary selling by some central banks as the main drivers of the correction. Even so, the firm's new target remains above gold's current global market price.
